Job details:
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager/Senior Manager to join our U.S. Tax practice. In this role, you will serve as the day-to-day leader on a portfolio of client engagements, balancing technical excellence in tax compliance with high-value advisory work that helps clients navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
The Tax Manager/Senior Manager is the critical link between firm leadership and the engagement team. You will own engagement economics and quality, function as a primary client relationship contact, and play a central role in attracting, developing, and retaining the next generation of tax professionals. Success in this role requires equal strength across three dimensions: technical mastery, commercial and client acumen, and people leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Manage the end-to-end delivery of federal, state, and local income tax compliance for a portfolio of corporate, partnership, S-corporation, and/or individual clients, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and on-time filing.
- Oversee the preparation and detailed review of complex tax returns and supporting workpapers, including consolidated returns, multistate apportionment, partnership allocations, and book-to-tax adjustments.
- Coordinate quarterly and annual estimated payments, extensions, and information reporting obligations.
- Supervise responses to federal and state tax authority notices, examinations, and information document requests, escalating significant issues to firm leadership as appropriate.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and case-law developments and assess their impact on client filing positions and compliance processes.
- Enforce quality control standards and risk management procedures across all deliverables, ensuring adherence to firm methodology, professional standards, and documentation requirements.
Tax Advisory & Consulting
- Identify, scope, and deliver tax planning and advisory opportunities that create measurable value for clients, including entity structuring, transaction support, accounting method changes, and credits and incentives.
- Advise clients on the tax implications of significant business events such as mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, financings, expansions, and ownership changes.
- Research complex technical issues across federal, state and local, and (in coordination with specialists) international and indirect tax, and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Prepare and review technical memoranda, opinions, and client deliverables that document positions, assess risk, and articulate alternatives.
- Proactively communicate planning ideas and emerging risks to clients, positioning the firm as a trusted long-term advisor rather than a transactional service provider.
Client Relationship & Engagement Management
- Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients, building durable relationships grounded in responsiveness, technical credibility, and commercial understanding.
- Own engagement planning, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, and economics; monitor realization, write-offs, billing, and collections, and take corrective action as needed.
- Manage engagement risk, including client acceptance and continuance considerations, scope changes, and timely escalation of sensitive matters.
- Identify scope expansions and cross-serving opportunities, and support business development efforts including proposals, pitches, and pricing.
- Communicate engagement status, issues, and resolutions clearly to clients and to firm leadership.
People Management & Development of Talent
- Lead, supervise, and develop teams of senior associates, associates, and interns across multiple concurrent engagements.
- Delegate work thoughtfully to provide stretch opportunities, then provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback that accelerates technical and professional growth.
- Serve as a coach, mentor, and career advisor, supporting goal-setting, performance reviews, promotion readiness, and individual development plans.
- Train junior staff on technical concepts, firm tools and technology, research techniques, and client-service expectations, including hands-on review of their work as a teaching mechanism rather than simply a correction step.
- Foster an inclusive, high-performing team environment that promotes engagement, accountability, and retention.
- Contribute to recruiting efforts, including campus and experienced-hire interviewing, and help onboard new team members.
- Model the firm's values and professional standards, setting the tone for ethics, quality, and client service.
Practice & Firm Contribution
- Drive adoption of tax technology, automation, and data analytics to improve efficiency, quality, and the client experience.
- Contribute to thought leadership, internal training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Support process improvement and methodology development within the practice.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Active CPA license, or J.D., LL.M. (Taxation), or Enrolled Agent credential. Candidates on a clear path to licensure may be considered.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive U.S. tax experience, including at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or review capacity, preferably within a public accounting or professional services firm.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. federal and state income taxation, including corporate, partnership, and/or pass-through taxation as relevant to the practice area.
- International tax foundational knowledge is preferred, but not required.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple engagements, deadlines, and teams simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients and staff.
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop junior professionals.
