SUMMARY:
Plans, organizes, directs, and controls the activities of the Maintenance function, including buildings and equipment; coordinates work needed to keep the plant in operation; establishes good lines of communication between mechanical and plant operations; maintains an effective preventative maintenance schedule; and controls mechanical inventories. Encourage good work habits and promote safety. Develop a staff of competent personnel capable of performing their job requirements satisfactorily. Manage on-site projects during implementation to meet design and time objectives. Plan, develop, and provide the expertise in implementing and achieving efficient utilization of the workforce and plant facilities so as to achieve specific quality standards in a safe and efficient manner. Assist and support the Plant Engineer in all aspects of the maintenance department. Encourage and promote safety.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for supervising a group of personnel who perform somewhat identical and related tasks or activities. This position will work closely with all Superintendents in order to know and assist with planning activities including providing coverage for PTOs in their absences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist in the identification, development, and implementation of special projects that will result in achieving or exceeding established labor goals by recommending new methods, layouts, and/or equipment changes.
- Responsible for evaluating the performance of personnel in the Maintenance Department. This individual recommends training requirements, has the duty to keep staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet company needs and objectives, and may recommend that personnel be hired or removed from the department.
- Establish and clearly communicate realistic job requirements for subordinates; provide frequent feedback and review on performance and accurately appraise performance results against communicated expectations and, when necessary, resolve performance or work habit deficiencies.
- Be familiar with OSHA and FSIS regulations and work with FSIS to receive, evaluate and report work needed to keep the plant running in accordance with government requirements.
- Defines and recommends objectives in areas of responsibility. Develops specific short-term and long-term plans and programs.
- Assists in the reviews and makes recommendations on cost control, cost estimates, and manpower and facilities requirements forecasts.
- Coordinates and collaborates with other departments in the plant in establishing and carrying out responsibilities.
- Plan, develop and implement an effective preventative maintenance program in all
production departments.
- Provide timely and accurate performance information on all aspects of the operations at the plant within the area of responsibility.
- Ensure compliance with the safety policies and procedures. Provide timely written feedback on causes of doctor cases and lost time accidents and recommendations for precluding recurrence.
- Assists in the design of maintenance strategies, procedures, and methods;
- Diagnose breakdown problems and develop ways to pre-empt breakdowns by developing strategies to improve the overall reliability and safety of plant, personnel, and production processes.
- Arrange procurement of fixtures, fittings, or components for use in special projects or the repair or installation of equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred. Five years of mechanical field experience and five years supervisor in the mechanical field. Well-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employees. Proven ability to recruit, train and motivate personnel. Must have strong organizational skills.
KNOWLEDGE:
This position requires the knowledge of the whole plant as it pertains to the day-to-day operations. Candidate must be versed in the Harvest floor / Fabrication floor and have a well-rounded understanding of the processes within the Rendering and Wastewater processes.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from maintenance supervisors, workers, and employees using capital equipment within the Company.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language, such as safety files, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must effectively communicate with USDA, production, and management personnel. Bilingual skills are a plus.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations. Demonstrated ability to understand basic statistics for process control.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in the mathematical, diagram, written, and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available. SQF Certification preferred.
