Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Trainee ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) role based in Chennai. The Trainee ETO will support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical, electronic, and communication systems on board vessels under the guidance of senior technical staff. Daily tasks include assisting in routine inspections, logging and reporting equipment status, and following preventive maintenance schedules for power distribution, automation, navigation, and safety systems. The role also involves learning and complying with safety procedures, participating in drills, and supporting emergency response for electrical and electronic issues. The Trainee ETO will collaborate closely with engineering and deck teams while building technical competence and professional discipline required for an independent ETO position.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in electrical, electronics, or instrumentation engineering, ideally with a diploma or degree in a relevant technical discipline.
- Basic understanding of power systems, control systems, and electronic equipment, with a willingness to learn marine-specific technologies.
- Ability to read technical drawings, manuals, and schematics, and to follow standard operating and maintenance procedures.
- Good problem-solving and analytical skills, with an aptitude for troubleshooting technical issues under supervision.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills to report faults, document maintenance activities, and coordinate with shipboard teams.
- Readiness to work in a shipboard environment, including rotational shifts, confined spaces, and varying weather and sea conditions.
- Commitment to safety, compliance with company and international maritime regulations, and participation in safety drills and trainings.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team, showing reliability, discipline, and respect for diverse backgrounds.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with MS Office and an aptitude for learning equipment-specific software.
- Valid medical fitness and any mandatory maritime certifications as per regulatory requirements (or willingness to obtain them).
