Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $21.95 - $23.38 per hour, depending on skills and qualifications.
Work Schedule: Schedule (varies) but the typical schedule is Monday – Friday 7:00am to 3:30 but may include some nights, weekends, and holidays, and special events as business needs require (limited to 28 hours per week)
NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the Forestry Division, individuals in this position performs semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the urban forest and shrub and flower beds including the use of hand tools, power tools and various equipment
Most positions require that the individual work Monday through Friday, which may also require weekend and evening hours on a regular or occasional basis. This part-time employment may be scheduled throughout the year on a part-time, 28-hour per week basis, depending on the needs of the town. This position is not to exceed 1,456 hours per year.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Town Forester to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The individual in the Forestry/Horticulture Maintenance Technician role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulation and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
- Perform a variety of miscellaneous forestry/horticulture duties including planting, maintaining, watering, inspecting, weeding, pruning and removing annuals, perennials, grasses, shrubs, small trees and other plants within the town’s parks, facilities, open space, public right-of-way and other properties under the control of the town. Prepare and maintain all annual and non-woody perennial beds and assist with shrub bed care; assist in or be responsible for bed design.
- Repairs irrigation systems, inspects for leaks and assures water timing is appropriate so as to not interfere with public usage of parks and open spaces.
- Plants, maintains, and protects trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and other plantsby assuring proper location, area supplies root and canopy space and the appropriate soil quality & water supply.
- Assist with measuring and marking trees and collects data on tree conditions
- Assists with identifying defective trees such as diseased and insect damaged trees and shrubbery
- Assists with hazard tree analysis. Reports trees that are hazardous, (hanging branches and fallen tree limbs)
- Ensures safety regulations and procedures are adhered to.
- Performs related work as required and assigned.
- Conducts tree inventories
- Inputs daily work data into the computer tracking system (Productive Parks) and maintains accurate records of work performed.
OTHER DUTIESDepending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
- Forestry/Horticulture Maintenance Technician position is part of the snow removal program which includes scheduled on-call responsibilities typically during the months of October to April. Forestry Maintenance Technicians are required to review and acknowledge the Snow Guidelines annually.
- The Forestry/Horticulture Maintenance Technician position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check.
- Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
- Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
- Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience and education in landscaping, arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, and related fields are preferred but not required
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES- Must have a current Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire, that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards.
- CPR/1st Aid certification within three (3) months of employment
- ISA and/or CLT certification(s) preferred but not required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES- Ability to safely operate various forestry and horticulture related equipment and tools
- Knowledge of basic plant maintenance
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the Town of Windsor and the department.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
- Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.
- Ability to perform the necessary functions of the position and to make appropriate decisions consistent with the job expectations and position description.

MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:
- Equipment: Position requires use of a variety of equipment: brush chipper, water truck, aerial lift truck, tree spade, chainsaw, tractor, backhoe, loader, rototiller, dump truck, truck and trailer, weed whip, chemical sprayers and various hand and power tools.
- Materials: Position requires use of a variety of materials: fertilizer, pesticides, soil and mulch

The employee may be subject to the following environmental conditions: inside, such an office setting; outside, with little to no effective protection from weather; extreme cold, typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour; extreme heat, temperatures typically above 100 degrees of periods of more than one hour; subject to noise and vibration.
The employee is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. The employee is subject to atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system, or the skin.
This position is considered safety-sensitive because the individual is responsible for their safety as well as the safety of others. Performing these job functions under the influence of drugs or alcohol would pose significant dangers.
