About the Department
An employee in this class performs inspections to ensure compliance with the Town’s standards and specifications. Work involves site visits to ensure proper construction methods are being used to develop new Town infrastructure. Review and tracking of test reports related to asphalt density and concrete strength, to ensure work meets the Town specifications. Work in this class is performed with a high level of independence and judgment. Work is supervised by the Engineering Inspections Supervisor and is evaluated through conferences, review of work results obtained, and overall success of the Engineering Inspections program.
Position Duties
- Tracks stages of development.
- Inspects work on infrastructure (subgrade, asphalt, concrete work, storm drain) to ensure proper construction methods are met.
- Conducts compaction testing for new developments.
- Reviews and tracks test reports for concrete strength and asphalt densities.
- Assists Land Development and the Town of Wendell.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with County Trade Inspectors assigned to Wendell.
- Educates and provides information to citizens, developers, and the general public in relation to applicable laws, town policies, regulations, and codes.
- Participates in continuing education and professional development workshops, classes, and other activities.
- Attends pre-construction meetings.
- Educates contractors on correct procedures and guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of the Town's ordinances and codes.
- Thorough knowledge of the Town’s geography.
- Knowledge of construction means and methods.
- Ability to seek and implement reasonable solutions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, developers, builders, and contractors.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, standards, and specifications.
- Ability to read and track material testing reports.
- Ability to enforce codes with firmness and tact.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and studies.
- Ability to maintain an inventory.
- Ability to express ideas effectively in oral and written forms.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction or supervision.
Other Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED and considerable experience in local government infrastructure inspections, construction, or related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An associate’s degree in engineering technology, construction management, or related field is desirable.
