Position Summary
The Town of Forest Heights is seeking a dependable and hardworking individual to join our Department of Public Works as a General Crewman. This position is responsible for supporting the maintenance, repair, and improvement of town infrastructure, including streets, parks, sanitation systems, and public facilities. Under the general leadership of the Public Works supervisor, the Crewman performs manual labor and operates a variety of hand and power tools and light equipment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained town environment. Work hours are generally Monday through Friday, but you may be required to respond outside those hours for certain matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of streets, street signs, sidewalks, storm drains, and public facilities.
- Operate tools and equipment, such as leaf blowers, mowers, snowplows, and hand tools.
- Assist in trash collection, snow removal, landscaping, sweeping, and debris cleanup.
- Load and unload materials and supplies.
- Prepare Town Hall for council meetings and events
- Follow safety procedures and maintain equipment in good condition.
- Report hazards, damage, or unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Respond to emergency work orders and town service requests as needed.
- Mow grass, prune trees and hedges, and plant flowers and trees as required. Cleans Town Hall offices, garage areas, and park facilities, as well as clean up litter and empty trash cans
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Maryland Class C Driver’s License.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when required.
- Some prior manual labor role
- Basic safety training and a strong safety acumen
- Strong teamwork, communication, and attitude
- Basic knowledge of manual labor tools and techniques.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ideal Qualifications:
- + years of experience in construction, landscaping, maintenance, or public works.
- Possession of a CDL (Class B or higher).
- Familiarity with small engine equipment and routine maintenance.
- Basic understanding of public infrastructure systems (stormwater, roadways, etc.).
- OSHA 10 or basic safety training certification.
- The qualifications listed within this job description are guidelines. An equivalent combination of education and experience that results in the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to perform essential job functions may be considered.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
* Ability to understand verbal information and instruction. Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.
- Ability to read and understand written information. Ability to compose information and instructions in written form.
- Ability to speak one or more foreign languages is helpful, particularly Spanish.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work with exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noise, dust, and potentially hazardous conditions.
- Regularly requires bending, lifting, standing, climbing, and walking.

This position reports to: Public Works Supervisor
This Position has no supervisory or management responsibility

Salary:
$42,025.00 a year
