About the Department

This class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings in the Building Facilities Division of Public Works. Work includes building maintenance and custodial work, mechanical repair and alteration work, and driving. Work is performed under supervision and in accordance with standard practices, codes and skills, and OSHA-required safety protocols.

Position Duties

  • Drives, loads and/or unloads designated trucks with trailers and/or attachments (such as skid steers).
  • Performs and/or assist with facilities maintenance work such as painting and paint removal, furniture refinishing, wallpaper and drywall work, flooring repair and installation, window repair and replacement, and create and install signage.
  • Performs general carpentry, maintenance, mechanical, construction, painting, and/or tree grounds work.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of designated equipment. gathering of tools, equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Performs unskilled or semi-skilled trades work as assigned.
  • Prepares truck or equipment for operation by performing routine safety check before and after operating equipment.
  • May be assigned on the job training under the supervision of a higher classified employee, including working as a trades apprentice.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize standard tools, materials, methods and practices of manual work in a specific line of work, including operating equipment and machinery.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Graduation from High School or GED and two (2) years of experience in construction work, road work, building maintenance, custodial work, grounds maintenance work, driving or any combination of experience and training that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. 
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications. 
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment of overtime for emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
