Title: Fleet Maintenance Mechanic
Department: Department of Public Works
Nature of work:
Perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair and servicing of automotive and related mechanical equipment as well as assisting with facility maintenance and upkeep.
Wages: $26.24 – $31.93 per hour.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 40 hours per week, including compensated on-call duty as required on a rotating schedule from November 1 through April 1.
Supervision Received: Receives direction from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, DPW Director and Highway Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised: Limited supervision of other maintenance employees during special assignments as determined by Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Responsibilities:
Exercises independent judgment in assessing and determining extent of equipment repair of fleet vehicles while working in coordination with other maintenance employees. Makes recommendation to Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Director, and Highway Superintendent as to required major repairs or replacement of equipment.
· Maintenance and repair of all fleet equipment and specialized machinery.
· Dismantles, evaluates, rebuilds, and repairs automotive and other specialized equipment including trucks, tractors, graders, loaders, snow blowers, rollers, power shovels, asphalt pavers, plows and associated electrical and hydraulic systems.
· Responsible for routine equipment/vehicle maintenance including changing oil, greasing, washing, and tire changing.
· Mounts and removes snowplows, wings, and frames.
· Sands and repaints fleet equipment.
· Fabricate and repair parts and equipment by use of special welding and forging tools equipment.
· Operates various pieces of DPW equipment in emergencies, or as needed, situations.
· Occasionally performs the duties of other equipment operators as needed.
· Additional duties, activities, responsibilities, and requirements may be assigned with or without notice at any given time.

Requirements
Competencies Needed:
We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills a qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.
· Graduation from high school or any combination of schooling and in-service training and experience.
· Four to six years’ experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of automotive and related DPW equipment.
· The Town provides tools to perform job, may bring personal tools.
· Possession of a valid State Driver's license and CDL are required.
o DOT physical and related testing required.
· Must be able to operate and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Must be able to read and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to communicate effectively with public, elected officials and other government agencies.
· Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies and procedures and continue to learn new methods and stay current within the field.
- Able to maintain basic accurate records of work performed.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
- Must be able to work effectively in the absence of close supervision.

This position requires the employee to: Regularly stand, use their hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, and communicate verbally and hear. Frequently walk and reach with their hands and arms. Occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is primarily performed indoors, but occasional outdoor work is required, potentially in unfavorable weather conditions.
The employee must be able to tolerate moderate noise levels and frequent interruptions in a moderately too fast-paced environment. The ability to work under stress due to demanding deadlines, public interaction, and shifting priorities is also required.
