Role Summary

Join the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) and become a driving force in shaping the future and helping political leaders get big things done.

TBI comprises a Politics and Policy team, an Advisory practice, and a Partnerships function that all demand a unified, coherent, crisp, and politically relevant marketing to key stakeholders the world over, most notably political leaders and the changemakers in their orbit.


The newly created Director, Marketing role will be responsible for leading the development and execution of comprehensive marketing strategies that drive brand awareness and client engagement, clearly defining how TBI is perceived and shows up in the world, with a clear eye towards building and supporting business development and commercial growth.


This role offers the unique opportunity to craft compelling narratives and impactful campaigns that resonate with political leaders and influential stakeholders worldwide. You will spearhead TBI’s marketing efforts for both current and potential clients, positioning TBI as the premier partner for political leaders. You will also convey to donors and funders the unique value proposition we offer and how their support translates to real-world positive outcomes for people.


This senior role involves overseeing all aspects of marketing operations, including setting the strategic direction, campaign development, digital marketing and content creation. You will leverage your expertise to ensure that all marketing initiatives are aligned with our business objectives and utilise data-driven insights to optimise performance and impact.


In this role, you will manage the Institute’s brand, ensuring consistency and coherence across all communications and platforms. Additionally, you will spearhead efforts to expand our digital footprint, employing innovative digital marketing tactics to engage and inform our global audience. Your leadership will be instrumental in driving the Institute’s growth and ensuring that our work continues to inspire and catalyse positive change worldwide.


You will be responsible for managing the TBI Creative Studio team, comprising our in-house team of designers, creative producers and digital experts, inspiring and empowering to do their best work. The role will report into the Executive Director for Global Strategic Comms.


This role is based in London, and applicants must be eligible to work in the UK.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Executive Director, Global Strategic Communications, a new SVP, Global Affairs, and the wider the Senior Leadership Team at TBI to devise and deliver an ambitious global marketing and communications strategy
  • Devising TBI’s annual marketing strategy with input from Policy & Politics, Advisory and Partnerships teams
  • Leading the creation and delivery of campaign marketing plans, whether that be thought leadership, live events, digital marketing or social media content
  • Generating global case studies to showcase our work and experience for use across web, social, mailers and events
  • Close collaboration with Head of Project Management and the wider PM team to identify creative opportunities within the organisation and carry them through from conception to final delivery, reviewing and evolving processes where necessary
  • Offering creative leadership, direction and line management for the TBI Studio team, comprising of an in-house Design, Web and Video teams
  • Collaborating closely with the Communications Director on TBI’s digital and social strategy, leading on creative oversight and content delivery
  • Fostering a sense of community amongst the regional and departmental marketing leads, including coordinating and facilitating regular catch ups and alignment of activity
  • Acting as the point of contact for global teams to find relevant case studies, marketing content, and other initiatives
  • Think critically and ask the right questions, ensuring we’re doing things the right way and for the right reasons
  • Being a true brand guardian alongside Head of Design to ensure the TBI brand is respected and utilised across the organisation, pushing design principles and innovation throughout our work
  • Overseeing budget management for marketing initiatives, ensuring cost-effective allocation of resource
  • Encouraging the team’s creative development by sharing best practices, identifying training, and mentoring their progress
  • Utilise data-driven insights to optimise marketing performance and impact
  • Run projects and present work alongside the TBI Studio team - championing creative excellence whilst being aware of commercial pressures including resourcing and budget
  • Partnering with stakeholders across the business to build trust, champion the department and position the Studio as expert in their field


Person Specification

  • Extensive experience in a creative leadership/marketing role with proven examples of successful campaigns you have driven
  • Relevant leadership experience, able to demonstrate success in coaching a creative team in their personal and professional development
  • Ability to take a high-level understanding of a brief and provide clarity of thought and direction to the team
  • Adept at following processes and understanding the needs of a complex environment
  • Both strategic and creative, you can develop, hone and present ideas for campaigns and concepts to senior leaders and key stakeholders with ease
  • Effective multi-tasker, comfortable prioritising to meet deadlines and working across multiple parts of the organisation
  • Understanding of current omni-channel marketing and advertising techniques
  • Hands-on, proactive and a keen problem solver, you are endlessly curious with the ability to think critically in pursuit of the best possible work, you are not afraid to ask the right question to interrogate a brief
  • Understanding of how to brief creative partners such as production companies, designers and agencies, to deliver projects against your creative vision.
