Position Summary
The Chief Building Engineer is responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and performance of building systems and infrastructure. This role leads all engineering and maintenance activities, ensuring the property is safe, efficient, and well-maintained. The Chief Engineer supervises staff and vendors, manages preventative maintenance programs, and serves as the primary technical authority for the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Building Systems & Maintenance
- Oversee operation and maintenance of all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and life safety systems.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to ensure optimal system performance and longevity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and operational issues.
- Maintain building automation systems (BMS) and monitor system performance.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and direct engineering staff, including scheduling, training, and performance management.
- Provide guidance and oversight to the Security & Facilities Coordinator (support role).
- Coordinate and manage third-party contractors, vendors, and service providers.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard.
Facilities Operations
- Plan and oversee repairs, renovations, and capital improvement projects.
- Maintain building appearance, functionality, and tenant comfort.
- Respond to escalated maintenance requests and emergencies.
- Ensure the readiness of building systems during extreme weather or outages.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, fire/life safety codes, etc.).
- Partner with the Fire Safety Director to maintain emergency preparedness and response plans.
- Oversee inspections, permits, and certifications for building systems.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and compliance documentation.
Budgeting & Administration
- Develop and manage engineering and maintenance budgets.
- Track expenses, review invoices, and control costs.
- Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Provide regular reports on building performance and maintenance activities.
Working Conditions
- Standard office hours for this role are 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.
- On-call 24/7 availability for emergencies. May require –
- Early morning or late evenings.
- Response to weather-related or utility emergencies.
- Weekend or holiday work.
- A combination of indoor and outdoor environments, depending on facility needs.
- Exposure to operations areas such as mechanical rooms, loading areas, storage areas, rooftops, or secure locations.
