Duties
Performs tasks related to the construction of overhead electric transmission line components. This includes but is not limited to: setting wood, steel, concrete or other material poles; installing all required hardware such as cross arms, insulators, dead-end assemblies, lightning arresters, wave traps, various structure guying; installing conductors, fiber optic wire, static wire and guys; erecting steel towers and switch structures; installing vertical and horizontal switches; assembling and framing poles; climbing all transmission line poles and towers; working from aerial lifts.
Employee is expected to perform all work in a safe manner, to read and understand the Transmission/Power Supply Safety Manual, to participate in safety meetings, tail gate meetings, and participate in all safety related programs conducted within Electric System Projects. He/she is expected to protect coworkers and members of the public from unsafe conditions. After proper training can perform switching operations and hold clearances as may be required in the performance of assigned duties.
Drives and operates various equipment and vehicles used in the construction of transmission lines.
Employee is expected to take appropriate actions to minimize damage to rights of way and to follow Best Practice Rules for environment issues.
Employee is expected to respond to emergency work on TVA’s transmission system and to work extended hours when required by system emergencies.
Employee is expected to inspect completed transmission line construction work as outlined in the “Self Inspection Program.”
Qualifications
Must have a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate and completed a recognized apprentice training program or its equivalent.
Must possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL), and may be required to possess and maintain various certifications to operate special equipment such as truck cranes, aerial lifts and other line construction equipment.
Experience in the construction of transmission lines is desired.
Supervision Received
Employee is under the general supervision of a Transmission Construction Foreman and the direct supervision of a Transmission Line Foreman, who assigns, directs, and checks the work performed.
Supervision Over Others
None.
However, may direct employees in other classifications such as Lineman Apprentice and Groundman in carrying out their job duties.
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements
Must meet TVA’s physical/medical requirements for lineman and those associated with the various equipment certifications/licenses required of this classification.
Should be able to work for prolonged periods of time under inclement weather conditions during emergency restoration periods.
