Duties
Services and maintains equipment in substations; and, in emergencies or as required, performs maintenance and restoration activities on transmission lines. This includes inspecting equipment; testing, treating, and filtering oil; repairing or replacing bushings as needed; repairing oil leaks; tightening or replacing loose connections; adjusting or replacing power equipment and electrical contacts; timing of oil circuit breakers; repairing and adjusting switches; painting equipment and structures.
Performs maintenance work, does switching, and holds clearances on all types of substation apparatus and equipment of all voltages. Some of the maintenance work is done on energized equipment of various voltages, up to and including EHV, and in close proximity to energized equipment which may require climbing structures. Must be thoroughly familiar with approved safe-working practices and capable of performing duties in a safe, economical environmentally sound manner.
As assigned, makes periodic maintenance inspections of substations and communications and control equipment which includes, but not limited to, the following: inspection of transformers, power circuit breakers and regulators; testing of insulation medium; operating, when possible, power circuit breakers and regulators and noting any abnormal conditions; inspection of all air break switches, fuses, busses, bus connections, lightning arresters, ground connections, buildings, fences, oil tanks, yard appearance, switch sticks and containers, and other equipment; operation, when possible, of air breaker switches to determine if contacts are in proper alignment and if switch mechanism functions correctly.
Checking condition of battery and charger and giving the battery an equalizing charge in stations; and, in general, determining that the station and all equipment are in satisfactory operating condition. As practicable, makes minor repairs and clears discrepancies noted in these inspections.
Responsible for observing all safety regulations and protecting fellow employees and the public from hazardous conditions under his/her control. As assigned, serves safety observer and performs other safety related duties.
In cases of emergencies, makes inspections to determine and report the extent of equipment damage; and, where possible, makes repairs necessary to restore service.
As may be required, inspects and tests equipment in new or rehabilitated substations and prepares reports and field notes. Assists in restoring service to communications circuits and transmission lines. Performs other duties for which a journeyman electrician is qualified.
May be required to drive and operate various equipment and vehicles to perform substation maintenance work.
Qualifications
Must have a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate.
Must have completed a recognized apprentice training program or equivalent.
Required to possess and maintain required mobile equipment certification(s) for the operation of special substation maintenance lift equipment (Aerial Lifts, JLGs, etc.).
Employee must be a journeyman electrician well experienced in the operation and construction of substations and the maintenance of all equipment used in high-voltage substations.
When assigned to a nuclear plant, must be able to obtain and maintain an unescorted plant access, and S-3 and S-4 medical clearances with not shift work or overtime restrictions and must be physically/medically qualified to work rotating shifts and work maximum overtime permitted under the TVA policy during peak workload periods.
