About the Role
As an API QA Lead, you will own and drive the quality strategy for backend and API systems while remaining hands-on with automation. You will lead QA initiatives for distributed systems, mentor engineers, and partner closely with product and engineering teams to ensure scalable, high-quality releases.
This role requires a strong mix of technical depth in API automation and leadership in QA strategy, processes, and team execution.
What You’ll Do
- Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and mentor a team of QA engineers, driving best practices in API and backend testing
- Define and implement QA strategy, test frameworks, and quality benchmarks across teams
- Own end-to-end quality for releases, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance
- Collaborate with engineering leadership to improve SDLC, CI/CD quality gates, and automation coverage
- API & Backend Testing (Hands-on)
- Review technical designs and API specs (Swagger/OpenAPI) for testability and edge cases
- Design and execute complex test cases for distributed systems, async workflows, and data integrity
- Build and maintain robust automation frameworks using Pytest, RestAssured, or Locust
- Develop comprehensive API test suites (REST/gRPC/GraphQL) covering schema validation, auth, and error handling
- Automation & Quality Engineering
- Drive automation-first culture; reduce manual testing through scalable solutions
- Implement automated test reporting and quality metrics dashboards
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines for continuous testing and faster releases
- Identify performance bottlenecks and contribute to reliability and scalability improvements
- Collaboration & Execution
- Partner with developers to identify automation opportunities early in the development cycle
- Participate in architecture discussions to ensure testability and observability
- Track defects, manage risk, and ensure timely resolution
- Advocate for quality and user experience across all product initiatives
Qualifications
- Experience: 7–11 years in Software QA with strong focus on API and backend testing, including team leadership or mentoring experience
- Automation: Proven expertise in building and scaling backend automation frameworks
- Programming: Strong proficiency in Python (preferred) or similar language
- API Testing: Hands-on experience with REST and/or GraphQL APIs using Postman, RestAssured, Locust
- Architecture: Experience testing microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures
- CI/CD & SDLC: Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines, test automation integration, and agile methodologies
- Databases: Strong SQL skills with experience validating data integrity across systems
- Cloud & DevOps: Exposure to AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and deployment workflows
- Tools: Git, Jira, TestRail or similar test management tools
Nice to Have
- Experience leading QA for high-scale platforms or SaaS products
- Exposure to performance testing and observability tools
- Experience working in platform or API-first teams
