TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

ROLE OVERVIEW
The Technical Assistant (TA) will serve as the operational backbone of the department's studio and lab infrastructure, working closely with the Head of Department and faculty to ensure that all technical equipment, machinery, and digital systems are maintained, documented, and readily available for academic use. The role also carries a significant documentation responsibility — maintaining accurate records of assets, usage, and maintenance history. This position is open to graduates from any academic discipline; what matters most is a practical mindset, attention to detail, and the reliability to be present when the department needs it most — including during studio-intensive periods, events, and assessment cycles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment & Lab Management
- Manage, maintain, and operate departmental equipment, machinery, and tools in accordance with prescribed usage and safety guidelines
- Conduct routine checks and basic upkeep of lab hardware and equipment; coordinate with vendors and service teams for repairs and AMC compliance
- Ensure proper setup, calibration, and post-use storage of all equipment before and after classes, practical sessions, and departmental activities
- Manage issuance and return of equipment to students and faculty, maintaining accurate borrowing and inventory records
Technical Documentation
- Maintain detailed asset registers, equipment logs, and maintenance records for all departmental hardware, software, and consumables
- Prepare and update technical manuals, usage SOPs, and operational guidelines for lab and workspace usage
- Assist the Head of Department in compiling technical reports, inventory audits, procurement proposals, and institutional documentation
- Record and archive departmental activities, equipment history, and operational data for internal and compliance purposes
Infrastructure & Workspace Support
- Assist in setting up and restoring physical workspaces for classes, assessments, events, and external visits
- Coordinate with IT and facilities teams for network access, software installation, and infrastructure-related requirements
- Support basic troubleshooting of hardware and software on departmental systems and workstations
Departmental & Administrative Support
- Assist with general departmental correspondence, internal memos, and data entry as directed by the Head of Department
- Support coordination for events, guest visits, industry interactions, and institutional inspections
- Maintain organised physical and digital filing systems for technical records, warranties, AMC documents, and vendor correspondence
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university — no specific background required; aptitude and willingness to learn are valued equally
Technical Skills
Hands-on experience with AV equipment, studio gear, printing/output devices, or production machinery — prior exposure preferred, on-the-job training provided
Documentation
Ability to maintain registers, logs, and reports accurately; proficiency in MS Word and Excel
MS Office
Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for reports and data management
Basic Design Tools
Familiarity with Adobe suite or similar tools for capturing and formatting documentation — an advantage
AI Tools
Awareness of AI productivity tools for documentation and workflow support — preferred
Work Ethic
Hands-on, dependable, and safety-conscious; willing to extend availability during peak studio and event periods
