Job Summary
The Director of Hospital Operations is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and performance of key non-clinical departments. This role serves as a strategic partner and operational extension of the COO, ensuring efficient, compliant, and cost-effective operations across facilities, support services, and vendor relationships.
The Director of Hospital Operations plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, functional environment for patients, staff, and visitors while advancing organizational goals, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence in a rural healthcare setting.
Essential Job Functions
· Provides leadership and oversight of assigned departments, which may include:
o Imaging
o Environmental Services (EVS)
o Lab
o Dietary
o Therapy Services
o Emergency Preparedness/Safety Officer
· Ensures effective coordination of services to support clinical operations and patient care.
· Acts as a key operational advisor and support to the COO.
· Serves as acting COO in their absence, as designated.
· Leads emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response coordination.
· Ensures contracts align with organizational goals, compliance requirements, and budget expectations.
· Monitors vendor performance, service quality, and cost-effectiveness.
· Collaborates with leadership on group purchasing and cost-saving initiatives.
· Develops and manages departmental budgets for assigned areas.
· Monitors expenses, productivity, and resource utilization.
· Identifies opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
· Participates in capital planning and long-term operational strategy.
· Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including Critical Access Hospital Conditions of Participation.
· Supports accreditation readiness and survey processes.
· Maintains policies and procedures for operational departments.
· Partners with Quality and Risk teams to address safety concerns and mitigation strategies.
· Recruits, hires, supervises, and evaluates department managers and staff.
· Promotes a culture of accountability, service excellence, and teamwork.
· Supports staff development, training, and succession planning.
· Addresses employee relations issues in collaboration with Human Resources.
· Collaborates with the COO and leadership team on organizational strategy and goal setting.
· Leads or participates in performance improvement initiatives across operational departments.
· Utilizes data and metrics to drive decision-making and improve efficiency.
· Supports organizational growth, service expansion, and community needs.
· Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field required, or able to obtain degree within 2 years of starting position.
· Master’s degree preferred.
· Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations
· Experience in a Critical Access Hospital or rural healthcare setting strongly preferred
· Demonstrated experience with facilities management, contract oversight, and support services
Skills/Competencies
· Strong knowledge of hospital operations and regulatory requirements (CAH preferred)
· Experience with facilities management, safety standards, and emergency preparedness
· Financial acumen, including budgeting and cost control
· Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
· Ability to manage multiple departments and priorities effectively
· Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
