Job Context: The copper smelting operations of Birla Copper, Dahej has a large number of capital intensive and sophisticated Mechanical equipment and installations. This role involves proactive planning and strategizing of preventive maintenance and upgradation of Mechanical equipment as well as supervision of Mechanical maintenance at the AET-Refinery 3 Area in coordination with service providers, where applicable, in order to increase uptime. Machines that need to be maintained by this role holder are EOT cranes, Pumps, PHE’s , Hydraulics, Gearbox, Laser Alignment,. It involves being in a state of readiness for audits and implementing health, safety, environment norms and quality certification parameters with respect to Mechanical equipment under the area of jurisdiction and the processes they support. It involves ensuring skill building of team members for higher productivity and efficiency of operations.
Job Challenges
- Ensuring continuous power supply by maintaining sophisticated Mechanical equipment in the atmosphere of acidic and corrosive workplace as well as the heights jobs at cranes of Refinery. Maintenance of Equipment in Corrosive & Acidic Environment. The need to embed the culture of safety and sustainability Obtaining contractual manpower with requisite qualification.
- Most of the Equipment are single Line equipment, hence need meticulous planning to maintenance as very small window is there for planned maintenance.
- With the Plant getting older, there is continues requirement of upgrading old Mechanical equipment with latest technology like upgradation of pumps, CSM, APM, Cranes during Planned Shutdown.
- . It involves being in a state of readiness for audits and implementing health, safety, environment norms and quality certification parameters with respect to Mechanical equipment under the area of jurisdiction and the processes they support. It involves ensuring skill building of team members for higher productivity and efficiency of operations.

Safety & Workplace Management
- Optimize the Mechanical Energy Management System with close coordination of relevant AET Members & SMEs, to save cost and have a sustainable growth.
- Drive strategic / large scale improvement initiatives under the guidance of AET Leader & SMEs and ensure all statutory requirements in the Area are met with Focus on Safety Sustainable Operation.
- Implementing good housekeeping practices.
- Ensuring implementation of Corrective and Preventive Action Planning (CAPA) and other recommendation of audits.
- Ensuring implementation and horizontal deployment of corrective action to maximize Mechanical equipment contribution, plant availability and uptime.
- Steering and participating in Kaizens, Quality Circles, Task forces and other improvement initiatives.
- Ensure complete implementation of LOTOTO (Look-Out, Tag-Out & Try-Out) guidelines for personnel safety.
Daily Work Management
- Drive flawless daily work by undertaking following:
- Implementation of DMTs excellence standards across the Area
- Achievement of monthly, quarterly and annual P&B targets of the assigned Area in terms of quantity & quality
- Monitoring manpower performance and identifying development action need.
- Monitoring training of team members to enhance technical competencies, improve behavioral effectiveness and embed a culture of safety
- Improving employee engagement
- Implementing 5S work culture
- Undertake 'Abnormality Identification' in DMTs through Root Cause Analysis and address unfavorable deviations through countermeasures (Kaizen, SPL, Visual Controls, Mistake proofing, Change in SWI, etc.)
- Define work priorities, execute plans on day-to-day basis pertaining to SQCDPM, and review Root Cause Analysis of any unfavorable deviations in last 24 hours.
- Undertake daily & periodic 'Job Planning' through ERP system (Maximo / Ekayan) for efficient daily workflow.
Continuous Improvement
- Ensure continuous improvements using problem solving tools (RCA, OPL, Kaizen etc.)
- Drive FI, PI, Just Do It, Value Creation, and other improvement initiatives to improve productivity & cost efficiency of the Area.
- Create value through waste elimination, optimum resource utilization, productivity enhancement, etc.
- Identify & eliminate inefficiencies and NVAs in the system for streamlining.
Asset Care & Equipment Reliability
- Ensure equipment availability & health in the area by following measures: plan & implement preventive maintenance, track reliability testing & predictive maintenance, facilitate shutdown & overhaul, and ensure timely breakdown maintenance with functional support from CoE Asset Care, if required.
- Achieve zero production loss due to equipment related breakdowns by following measures:
- Ensure availability of critical spares
- Use ERP System (Maximo / Ekayan) and ensure complete adherence with maintenance schedule.
- Facilitate / Conduct Equipment Criticality Analysis to identify gaps & anticipate issues proactively and recommend solutions.
- Ensure implementation of best maintenance practices across the PBU and monitor its effectiveness in coordination with CoE-Asset care, to attain higher uptime of Plant and equipment.
- Undertake Root Cause Analyses of breakdowns, to minimize process disturbance and production delays.
- Control overall cost of maintenance by following measures: track spare consumption by conducting regular reviews, control spare inventory at optimum levels, explore possibility of using import substitutes and undertake innovative cost optimization projects.
- Ensure effective utilization & control of manpower, overtime, and store expenses through recycling spares and waste reduction.
- Use ERP to maintain & monitor following and assist daily asset care:
- Calibration / overhauling & breakdown / corrective maintenance, data related to 'Critical Process Instruments'
- Implementation of 'Work Order Cycle' to different agencies / departments by daily logbook keeping, recording maintenance record, etc.
- Structured data / check sheet for equipment details, job plan, safety plan, etc.
- Data related to maintenance history, jobs undertaken, and details of spares & consumables utilized.
- Strong knowledge of gear-boxes, hydraulics, fabrication and equipment alignment
- Familiarity with process control equipment, chemical handling lines, PP, tanks and valves.
- Experience with compliance of load test, tools .
- Proficient in reading drawings and process flow diagrams.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and software for troubleshooting.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Familiarity with preventive and corrective maintenance procedures for the EOT crane, including mechanical and instrumentation systems.
- Identify area of opportunity and conceptualize & execute projects for OEE improvement, technology upgradation, low cost mechanical, maintenance cost optimization, digitalization (FI / PI / JDI), etc. to create maximum value for the PBU.
- Monitor the progress on condition appraisal for all equipment, sub equipment and assemblies and ensure that condition appraisal & refurbishing of equipment is happening as per the plan.
- Undertake continuous recording of special events, trip analysis, failure analysis, efficiency improvement, benchmarking, efficiency evaluation, etc. for scope of improvement.
Process Care & Quality
- Drive the culture of structured problem solving by ensuring implementation of FI, Just Do It, and any other project which is derived from chronic issues.
Customer Centricity
- Minimizing internal customer response time
- Ensuring timely completion of all jobs as per internal customer request
- Submitting MIS of performance of all Mechanical Equipment under jurisdiction on a periodic basis.
- Facilitating vendor bill certification.
Capability Building & People Engagement
- Develop Skillset of DMT members and maintain optimum Skill inventory.
