Diesel Technician
Compensation & Representation:
The Diesel Technician is a classified staff member who is represented by the International Union of Operating
Engineers - Maintenance & Diesel Technicians (IUOE - Maint. & Diesel Techs) and compensated according to the
IUOE- Maint. & Diesel Techs Salary Schedule.
Essential Job Functions:
This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed
while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Reasonable accommodations are made to enable

● Responds to driver requests for vehicle maintenance, coordinating work with dispatchers
● Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical and engine defects in buses and other automotive equipment
● Overhauls and rebuilds gas and diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems and other major components
by repair and replacement of parts
● Diagnoses and repairs carburetor fuel systems and fuel systems in diesel engines
● Diagnoses and repairs alternators and other electrical components
● Performs general tune-ups on gas and diesel engines
● Make roadside repairs as required or tow disabled vehicles to the transportation department
● Monitors and maintains shop equipment, (i.e. parts washer, bus wash system, hydraulic lifts)
● Monitors and maintains fuel storage tanks, bulk lubricants and parts inventory
● Accurately documents vehicle maintenance, stock records, and safety inspection records
● Performs other duties as assigned
● Participates in staff and department meetings
● Works collaboratively within the professional learning community of the school and district
● Reports to work with regular and reliable attendance and punctuality
● Upholds board policy, district and building policies and goals
Minimum Qualifications:
● Journey-level status as a diesel mechanic or completion of a recognized diesel/heavy duty equipment
apprenticeship.
● Four (4) years work experience
Additional Requirements:
● Must possess a valid state driver’s license with a Class B CDL endorsement with air brake and P1
(passenger) and S (student) endorsements
● Maintain and possess CPR/AED and First Aid card (or obtain within the first 30 days of hire)
● Pre-employment physical capacity test is required

● Ability to use multiple communication systems, such as FleetVision, electronic work orders, electronic
mail, and computers
● Ability to maintain accurate records on school bus repairs, district owned vehicles and equipment repairs
● Skill in using appropriate tools
● Skill in preventative maintenance
● Ability to analyze and correct problems
● Ability to read, understand and interpret maintenance, parts manuals and schematics
● Ability to read, understand and adhere to safety instructions on machines and equipment
● Ability to communicate and establish cooperative relationships with staff, vendors, outside agencies and
the public
● Exhibits multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the capability to communicate
effectively with all cultural groups in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District
● Ability to learn new procedures quickly, flexibly and adaptably

Working Conditions:
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Reports issues regarding the safety and cleanliness of the worksite and requests necessary repairs due to
vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
Occasional exposure to weather. Moderate physical demand, occasionally required to lift and carry objects
weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and push/pull with up to fifty (50) pounds of force. Must be able to walk up to 500
feet at a time and climb stairs as needed.
The District operates on a fiscal year from September 1st through August 31st. Those employees who do not
work the full year are paid over a 12-month period. This means that during the school year the monthly pay
warrants will be approximately 1/12 of the school year earnings, which allows the employee to receive a pay
warrant during the summer months.
