POSITION TITLE

 

HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATE TEACHER                                                  

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

 

Performs difficult professional work providing a broad range of teaching services, assisting students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student's ability; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

    • Establishing a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Teaching a brand range of subjects; motivating students to achieve maximum potential; 
  • Develops lesson plans and use of instructional materials;
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
  • Integrates subject area content and technology;
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district;
  • Candidates must possess strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community, while collaborating with stakeholders to foster a positive educational experience. 
  • Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, music and other subjects based on approved course of study;
  • Establishes and maintains standard of behavior;
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports and report cards; submits all documents in timely manner;
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means;
  • Identifies student needs, assists with assessment of needs and requests special services as necessary;
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities;
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
  • Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required;
  • Participates in child study, Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings;
  • Performs related tasks as required;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Thorough knowledge of elementary education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

Bachelor's Degree required

Successful experience working with students in a classroom setting preferred

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 
  • Must commit to working for Suffolk Public Schools for a minimum of two years upon obtaining eligibility for a teaching license
  • This position requires a commitment to pursuing the qualifications needed for a Virginia teaching license within the one-year (school year) employment term.
  • Within 30 days of initial acceptance as an Associate Teacher, employee must be actively enrolled in courses that lead to licensure
