Subteams
Illinois Tech Rocketry is an interdisciplinary engineering team comprised of graduate & undergraduate students from different majors, from MMAE, ECE, Computer Science, Architecture to Chemistry, Biology, and Business. The team is made up of different subteams, including Research & Development (R&D), Liquid, Spaceport, Controls and Payload.
Research & Development
The R&D Team leads the design and development of our high-altitude dual-stage rockets and custom flight computers. In just two years, they’ve successfully launched six dual-stage rockets and are now developing a new flight computer for an upcoming launch. Through the Pioneer Program, a two-year initiative, the team is working to launch the first student-built dual-stage rocket to the Kármán Line.
Liquid
The Liquid Subteam designs and tests liquid rockets. The team is currently developing a Nitrous Oxide rocket, a Liquid Oxygen rocket, and a Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system.
Spaceport
The Aerodynamics Subteam is responsible for designing and building IREC 10k COTS rocket.
Controls
The Controls Team is responsible for designing, developing, and testing airbrake system for IREC rocket. From mechanical system to electrical system, the team aims to design and manufacture everything from scratch. Controls Team is currently working on designing custom PCB for their control system.
Payload
The Payload Subteam is responsible for designing and manufacturing autonomous flight vehicle that deploys from descending rocket and navigates to the ground as well as scientific payload for Spaceport America Cup.
