Position Title: Teacher – Special Education

SUMMARY: Facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through academic courses of study and by
implementing district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addresses
specific needs of students, provides a safe and optimal learning environment, and provides feedback to students, parents,
and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
● Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
● Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of
sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
● Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory
learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests.
● Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the students’ individualized education programs
(IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system
● Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of
instructional techniques and technologies.
● Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and
their individualized educational needs.
● Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on children and activities, as
required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations
● Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to
students.
● Perform related work as required.
● Assist in preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May oversee: Educational Assistants, Student Teachers, Volunteers, or Student Workers
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Valid Michigan Teaching Certification and meet Federal Highly Qualified Teacher requirements with and endorsement in
special education. Spanish language skills an asset.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure
manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or
employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area,
circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability
to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
