ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are building Kolkata's first dedicated large-format premium menswear destination — an 18,000 sq ft, three-floor store on Shakespeare Sarani, one of the city's most prestigious commercial addresses. The store will house international brands (Boss, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Gant, Lacoste), premium Indian formal and made-to-measure, and a dedicated designer ethnic and partywear floor.
We are seeking a Store Director to lead this venture from pre-launch through to full-scale operations. This is not a conventional store manager role — it is a business leadership position with full P&L ownership, brand relationship management, and the autonomy to shape a new retail concept from the ground up.
The Store Director will report directly to the Promoter and will be the single point of operational authority for the entire store.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Business Leadership
- Own the store P&L — revenue, gross margin, operating costs, and operating profit
- Set and deliver monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets across all categories
- Develop and execute the annual operating plan including revenue forecasts, staffing plans, marketing calendar, and inventory budgets
- Present weekly business reviews and monthly financial reports to the Promoter
- Identify and act on commercial opportunities — new brands, category extensions, event-driven sales, corporate partnerships
2. Brand Acquisition and Management
- Build and maintain relationships with brand licensees (Reliance Brands, Arvind Fashions, ABFRL, Bestseller India, designer houses)
- Negotiate commercial terms — wholesale margins, consignment/SOR arrangements, credit periods, SIS fit-out contributions, markdown support
- Manage the seasonal buying calendar — placing orders, planning OTB (open-to-buy), ensuring the right inventory depth by brand and category
- Conduct quarterly brand performance reviews and make recommendations on additions and exits
- Coordinate with brand VM teams to ensure shop-in-shop standards are maintained
3. Merchandise and Inventory
- Work with the Merchandise Manager to plan buying across international, formal, ethnic, and accessories categories
- Monitor sell-through rates, stock turns, ageing inventory, and markdown cadence
- Ensure inventory accuracy through regular cycle counts and RFID-based stock management
- Plan and execute EOSS (End of Season Sale) twice annually within defined margin guardrails
- Manage consignment stock reconciliation with brand partners
4. Customer Experience and Sales
- Create and maintain a premium, differentiated in-store experience across all three floors
- Build a clienteling and personal shopping program for high-value customers
- Develop a CRM strategy — capture customer data, drive repeat visits, build loyalty
- Ensure consistent service standards through mystery shopping, customer feedback, and staff coaching
- Personally manage relationships with the store's top 50 customers
5. Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and develop a team of 35-50 including floor managers, sales associates, personal stylists, cashiers, alteration staff, and support staff
- Create a performance-driven culture with clear individual targets and incentive structures
- Conduct regular training on product knowledge (brand by brand), selling techniques, and customer engagement
- Manage staff scheduling, attendance, leave, and payroll coordination
- Conduct quarterly performance reviews and annual appraisals
6. Visual Merchandising and Store Presentation
- Ensure the store's visual presentation is consistently premium and aligned with brand guidelines
- Work with the VM team to refresh displays seasonally and for key occasions (Durga Puja, Diwali, wedding season)
- Maintain store housekeeping, lighting, music, fragrance, and ambience at luxury standards
- Oversee trial room experience — cleanliness, lighting, mirrors, attendant service
7. Operations and Compliance
- Oversee daily store operations — opening/closing procedures, cash management, billing, security
- Ensure compliance with GST, labour laws, shop and establishment regulations, fire safety, and all statutory requirements
- Manage vendor relationships — housekeeping, security agency, maintenance, packaging suppliers
- Oversee POS and ERP systems to ensure data accuracy and operational efficiency
- Manage loss prevention — shrinkage control, CCTV monitoring, staff integrity protocols
8. Marketing Support
- Collaborate with the marketing team/agency on campaigns, events, and promotions
- Plan and execute in-store events — designer showcases, new collection launches, VIP evenings
- Drive the store's social media presence in coordination with the marketing function
- Build local corporate partnerships for corporate gifting and wardrobe programs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
- 10-15 years of total experience in fashion/lifestyle retail
- Minimum 5 years in a store leadership role (Store Manager, Assistant Store Director, or equivalent) at a premium or luxury multi-brand retailer
- Proven experience managing a store with annual revenue of Rs 10 Crore or above
- Strong understanding of both international brand operations and Indian ethnic/designer menswear
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage brand relationships with national licensees and distributors
- Experience with consignment/SOR inventory models
- Strong commercial acumen — ability to read a P&L, manage margins, and control costs
- Experience hiring, training, and leading retail teams of 25 or more people
- Fluency in English and Hindi; Bengali language skills are a strong advantage
Preferred:
- Experience at The Collective, Shoppers Stop (luxury division), or a comparable premium multi-brand format
- Experience managing a menswear-focused or men-heavy retail operation
- Prior involvement in a new store launch or store setup from scratch
- Understanding of made-to-measure / custom tailoring operations
- Experience with RFID-based inventory management and modern POS/ERP systems (Ginesys, Retailon, or equivalent)
- MBA or equivalent business qualification
WHY THIS ROLE IS SPECIAL
- You are not joining a chain — you are building a new retail brand from scratch
- You will have genuine autonomy and decision-making authority
- Shakespeare Sarani is one of Kolkata's most iconic commercial addresses
- The Promoter has prior retail experience and will be a hands-on partner in the building phase, not an absentee investor
