About Step Up

Step Up Tutoring is a dynamic nonprofit on a mission to expand access to high-impact tutoring for underserved students. Through the power of technology, community volunteers, and data-driven practices, we deliver academic and social-emotional support to students across the U.S. We are currently serving students in multiple states, actively expanding nationwide with a large concentration of families and tutors in the Los Angeles area.

We’ve delivered over 170,000 hours of high-impact virtual tutoring to more than 5,000 students in under-resourced communities and we're expanding our national reach by partnering with schools and universities across the country. In the coming year, we’re on track to double both the number of tutoring hours delivered and the students we serve.

Position Overview

We’re seeking a tech-savvy, bilingual Family Engagement Coordinator to lead our efforts in scaling onboarding and family support through every step of their Step Up journey. This role is remote, but some travel is required to attend community events and visit partner schools, as needed. You will coordinate a volunteer team, manage communication systems, and help ensure families remain informed and engaged. You’ll also work cross-functionally with the tutor operations, tech/product, and program teams to ensure that family engagement strategies are integrated and aligned with broader organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead family onboarding: In collaboration with the School and Family Partnership Manager, conduct intake calls with families, ensure complete documentation, and facilitate a seamless entry into the program.
  • Coordinate volunteer support: Manage and train volunteers assisting with onboarding and family communication tasks.
  • Automate family communication: Create and help implement reminders, updates, and engagement efforts through automation using tools like Google Suite, Airtable, and ZenDesk to improve the cost-effectiveness of operational and support tasks.
  • Incentive & engagement drives: Design and run family-centered initiatives (e.g., attendance rewards, milestone recognitions) to promote continued involvement and retention.
  • Provide timely support: Use ticketing tools (Zendesk) to track, respond to, and resolve family inquiries and concerns.
  • Maintain data integrity: Ensure accurate recordkeeping, track family engagement metrics, and use insights to inform strategy.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with the tutor operations, program, and tech/product teams to ensure family-facing processes align with tutor expectations, tech tools, and overall program goals.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (required)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience using tools such as Google Workspace, Airtable, and Canva
  • Familiarity with customer service platforms like Zendesk or similar (preferred)
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong data-driven mindset
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a remote setting
  • Collaborative and adaptable, with experience working cross-functionally
  • Passionate about educational equity, family engagement, and community-building
  • Previous experience in a family-facing, community outreach, or volunteer coordination role is a plus
