The West Virginia Tax Division is seeking an entry level candidate to join the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate. The chosen candidate will learn to investigate inquiries and complaints received from taxpayers unable to achieve resolution. The incumbent will gain basic knowledge of tax laws, regulations, filing requirements, and procedures for multiple tax types. Regular tasks include receiving and logging all incoming communications via phone, integrated tax system, email, and mail; verifying eligibility using established guidelines and policies; accept or reject cases based on established criteria; reassigning correspondence to the proper unit as necessary; assigning eligible cases to advocate; communicating with taxpayers, their representatives, attorneys, and other agency employees. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, have good written and oral communication skills, be familiar with both Microsoft and Google, and eager to grow with the office. Performs related work as required.
Employment requires a fingerprint-based criminal-background check to be provided at the West Virginia Tax Division’s expense. Failing to initiate the process or cooperate with this process, providing false or incomplete information, or discovery of disqualifying information will result in denial of, or dismissal from, employment or denial of transfer irrespective of when discovered. The chosen applicant will also be subject to a tax compliance check.
Minimum Qualifications
Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
OR
Substitution: Two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division OR two (2) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support may be substituted for the required training.
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent paid part-time experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support, OR two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division.
