About the Department
Serves as crew foreman supervising personnel to perform various duties related to sign, pavement marking, and guardrail maintenance installation. Functions as working supervisor; operates motorized equipment in a variety of maintenance activities, as needed, in the absence of regular equipment operators. Acts as the Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator for Laurens County. Maintains records of contracts, keeps a record of the pick ups for each group. Orders and installs the group sign and fine for littering signs. Ensures all contracts stay up-to-date. Plans and schedules routine and preventative maintenance activities as well as investigates citizen work requests; prioritizes and schedules the necessary work. Devises a daily schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Determines proper equipment, materials, and labor needed in order to complete tasks. Instructs personnel in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment and proper construction practices in maintaining roads and bridges. Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly reports and records of personnel's working time, accomplishments, material usage to input data in the Highway Maintenance Management System. Recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; rates employees according to the Employee Performance Management System. Conducts safety inspection on assigned vehicles and equipment and instructs crew members on proper vehicle and equipment pre-trip requirements. Ensures employees within the crew complete CDL pre-trip inspections prior to operating a CDL vehicle and equipment. Manages assigned crew in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Duties
Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
