Job Title: Math Specialist Wage/Hour Status: 10-Month

Primary Purpose:
The Math Specialist assists in improving instruction and learning outcomes in mathematics
for all students through coaching, professional learning activities, student data collection,
analysis, application, and intervention services with students.
Description:
The Math Specialist is an experienced educator and teacher-leader with a passion for
mathematics and believes that all students can reach high levels of math achievement.
Fundamentally, the Math Specialist is a learning facilitator, instructional specialist,
classroom supporter, mentor, and capacity builder for all staff. The Math Specialist will
work collaboratively with Administrators, Instructional Support Coaches, and the Building
Leadership Team to support data-based, informed decisions regarding instructional
support for math instruction and intervention. The Math Specialist will also work with
classroom teachers to identify and implement math interventions.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education/Certification:
● Master’s degree
● Professional Educator License (PEL)
● Endorsements in mathematics and elementary teaching
● Advanced coursework in mathematics
Special Knowledge/Skills:
● Strong background in mathematics.
● Knowledge of research-based instructional methods in math.
● Experience using and analyzing mathematics assessments and data.
Minimum Experience:
● At least five years of successful instructional work with students, increasing their
achievement in mathematics.
● Experience within a Professional Learning Community or similar results-based
collaboration.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instruction
● Work with classroom teachers to strengthen core mathematics instruction.
● Support educators in the use of a wide range of instructional practices and methods to
increase mathematics achievement of students.

● Support implementation of district mathematics curriculum and initiatives.
● Support school teams in selecting appropriate instructional strategies and interventions
based on student needs.
● Lead and participate in job-embedded professional learning related to improvement of
mathematics instruction and achievement.
Intervention
• Assess and diagnose needs of students requiring extra support in mathematics.
• Provide direct intervention to students in the classroom setting.
• Support classroom teachers in providing students with effective mathematics
interventions.
Assessment
• Support school teams in selecting and using effective mathematics assessments.
• Support school staff in analyzing and making instructional decisions from mathematics
data.
• Assess program and make recommendations for improvement.
Personnel Management
● Demonstrate, model, and coach instructional practices for instructional personnel.
Professional Growth and Development
● Participate in professional learning to examine coaching practices, collaborate with
colleagues, and develop coaching and instructional best practice expertise and tools.
Extended Work Day
● The Math Specialist will work all days required of educators. The Math Specialist will be
expected to attend the New Coaches Academy.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and
peripherals.
Posture: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, and
twisting.
Vision: Abilities required of this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Motion: Frequent movement throughout the work environment. Repetitive hand motions;
frequent keyboarding, use of mouse, and occasional reaching.
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying less than 50 pounds
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours
Mental Demands: Have the ability to solve complex problems in situations where only
limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions provided through written and
