Role Overview
As Senior Linux Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, automation, standardization, and lifecycle management of Williams-Sonoma's Linux estate. You will help improve platform reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency across on-premises and cloud-hosted environments.
This role is ideal for a hands-on infrastructure engineer with strong Linux fundamentals, growing automation capabilities, and sound operational judgment. You will partner closely with senior engineers, architects, and support teams to deliver reliable platform services, improve day-to-day operations, and contribute to the continued evolution of Linux platform engineering.

Key Responsibilities
- Define, implement, and maintain enterprise standards for Linux platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and related tooling.
- Engineer and support platform capabilities across OS lifecycle management, patching, repository services, configuration management, automation, and platform hardening.
- Design and optimize Linux platform performance through kernel, system, and application tuning based on capacity, reliability, and availability requirements.
- Drive automation and infrastructure-as-code practices across provisioning, configuration, patching, compliance, and operational workflows.
- Leverage AI-assisted engineering practices for personal productivity and continuous improvement, including proactive monitoring workflows, script development, and log analysis to accelerate troubleshooting, reduce manual effort, and improve operational insight.
- Administer and improve core Linux support services and toolchains such as Satellite, Ansible, GitHub, Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, and related platform components.
- Partner with architects and peer engineering teams to evaluate new technologies, run proof-of-concept initiatives, and contribute to the Linux platform roadmap.
- Gather technical and business requirements and translate them into scalable infrastructure designs and implementation plans.
- Collaborate closely with production support and Level 2 operations teams to improve runbooks, handoffs, operational readiness, and incident response effectiveness.
- Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation, including standards, build guides, implementation records, and operational procedures.
- Provide data-driven recommendations on platform health, capacity, risk, and modernization opportunities.
- Share knowledge with other engineers through documentation, collaboration, design reviews, and hands-on problem solving.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Sciences, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience.
- 10+ years of managing Linux operating systems in an enterprise environment.
- 7+ years leading technical teams that solve complex problems and provide detailed technical and business analysis.
- Deep expertise in Linux systems engineering within complex enterprise environments, including performance, security, lifecycle management, and troubleshooting.
- Strong experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and adjacent platform tooling for package management, patching, configuration, and automation.
- Hands-on experience with scripting and automation using Bash, Python, and other shell-based tooling.
- Demonstrated interest in responsibly using AI tools to strengthen personal engineering effectiveness, especially for drafting scripts, identifying patterns in logs and telemetry, and supporting faster root-cause analysis.
- Working knowledge of virtualization and cloud infrastructure platforms, along with modern container technologies and orchestration concepts.
- Experience with configuration management and automation platforms such as Ansible or equivalent tools.
- Strong understanding of Linux security best practices, system hardening, access controls, and operational compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting web and middleware stacks on Linux, such as Apache and Tomcat, and familiarity with database platforms in Linux-hosted environments.
- Experience with enterprise patching and content management solutions such as Red Hat Satellite is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Active Directory integration for Linux, including service principals, Kerberos, and keytab-based authentication, is a plus.
- Strong documentation, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to engineering and business stakeholders.
- A practical, ownership-oriented mindset and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Fundamental understanding of deploying and supporting Linux servers in a highly available and fault tolerant enterprise level environment.
- Delivery of fully integrated, automated, and highly available Linux provisioning process with enterprise level tools and technologies.
- Superior oral and written communication skills.
- Superior computer skills including MS Windows and MS Office including Excel, Access, Visio, and Word. ServiceNow experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of theory and principles of project management.
