About the role
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Locate underground utilities using specialized equipment (electromagnetic locators, ground-penetrating radar in some cases)
- Mark utility paths on the ground with color-coded paint or flags following industry standards (like APWA color codes)
- Read and interpret maps & plans (construction drawings, utility records)
- Coordinate with construction crews to ensure safe digging practices
- Respond to 811 locate requests (before excavation begins)
- Make sure rules and regulations are followed for safety and infrastructure.
- Document findings and update records of utility locations
- Verify existing fiber routes and sometimes trace signal paths
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic understanding of telecommunications and utility systems
- Ability to use locating equipment accurately
- Strong attention to detail (mistakes can be costly or dangerous)
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Good communication with crews and supervisors
- Ability to read GIS maps and blueprints
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license (often required)
- Experience: Typically requires at least 1-2 years of utility directional experience, often in an urban environment. More senior roles may prefer 3-5+ years.
- Ability to read and understand maps, blueprints, drawings, and diagrams.
- Experience in operating electromagnetic utility locators, ground-penetrating radar, GPS/GIS mapping tools, and using marking paint and flag
- Certifications: OSHA 10 Certification is often a minimum requirement.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to utility locating.
