About the Department
Under the general supervision of the Highway Superintendent and the Assistant Highway Superintendent, this position must be skilled in the operation of heavy and light equipment including dump trucks, snowplows and various other apparatus used in construction and maintenance of streets and highways. They must also have knowledge of vehicles and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of public works facilities and grounds, the skill and ability to service equipment and make minor repairs and adjustments in the field, and the capability to performs assorted tasks requiring manual labor for extended periods of time under sometimes unfavorable weather conditions when necessary. This position is considered essential and includes storm operations responsibilities, including 24/7 on call status for sanding/salting/snow plowing events as well as other weather-related emergencies, and requires the ability to drive and operate equipment during winter storm events and unfavorable conditions, often for lengthy durations. When not engaged in the operation of heavy equipment, the employee may drive a truck or perform manual labor as required. Assignments are given in the form of oral and written orders and work is performed with considerable independence under general supervision. The employee’s work is subject to review by a superior in progress or upon completion of results obtained.
ScheduleThis 40 hour a week C94 Union non exempt position works a regular schedule of 7:00 am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.
Salary$25.70 - $27.79 per hour, $53,464 - $57,797 Annually, Council 94 Grade 7, 8 hour shift.
This position is also eligible for incentive pay up to an additional $2.20 per hour depending on skills certifications attained in accordance with the C94 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent;
- Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy on and off road construction equipment.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities
- Must have some knowledge of the functions and operating methods of a variety of heavy on and off-road equipment used in excavating, loading, grading, and related work
- Must have some knowledge of the practices and techniques of maintaining and repairing heavy on and off-road equipment. Some knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of trucks and other related automotive equipment
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to make minor field repairs and adjustments in assigned equipment
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public
Required Licenses:
- Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid RI CDL Class B license, with all applicable type ratings, certifications, endorsements as required, within 6 months of hire
- Must have possession of a valid Department of Labor Hoisting Engineer’s License to operate heavy equipment or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Must have, or be able to obtain within 6 months of notice, all necessary licenses, certificates, ratings and endorsements as required to fulfill the duties of this position
