About the Department
Description
A person in this class is responsible for applying knowledge and skill acquired through specialized training and experience to the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks and heavy construction equipment such as graders, loaders, backhoes, tractors and related equipment. Work is performed according to standard trade practices and requires the application of considerable judgement in diagnosing difficult problems and determining appropriate corrective action. Assignments are given in the form of oral or written work orders from a fleet-based asset management software which specify the equipment to be worked on and the general nature of the problem or the work to be done. Work is subject to review upon completion but generally the employee is responsible for the quality of his work without inspection by a superior. The employee is subject to assignment of duties in any and all other areas of the Public Services Department, at the direction of the Highway Superintendent or his/ her designee.
Salary
$27.09 - $29.18 Hourly, $56,353 - $60,689 Annually, Council 94 Grade 8, 8 hour shift
Schedule
This 40 hour a week C-94 Union position works a regular schedule of 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.
Position Duties
- Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems;
- Performs a variety of mechanical and electrical repairs on all types of automotive and construction equipment;
- Overhauls and tunes engines;
- Adjusts and replaces parts including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies;
- Repairs or replaces generators, starters, and ignition systems;
- Repairs transmissions, differentials, springs and front or rear axle assemblies;
- Repairs or replaces hydraulic systems;
- Fabricates parts and makes modifications of equipment;
- Welds, brazes metals; uses oxy-acyetalene torches, lathes, etc.;
- Keeps records of work performed and materials used in computer-based fleet management software and written record;
- Responsible to oversee regular service maintenance and inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment;
- Performs related work as required;
- Performs data entry, completes work orders, manifests, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Specialized training in mechanics or closely related field
- Three years of related experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities
- Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; considerable knowledge and use of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding equipment
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools including diagnostic computers used in modern equipment maintenance
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public
Skilled In:
- Operation of listed tools and equipment
Required Licenses:
- Must have possession of a valid Department of Labor Hoisting Engineer’s License to operate heavy equipment
- Must have, or be able to obtain within 6 months of notice, all necessary licenses, certificates, ratings and endorsements as required to fulfill the duties of this position
