About the Department
The Assistant Park Superintendent is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance of municipal grounds, park amenities, and athletic facilities. Work requires the application of considerable technical knowledge gained on the job through experience and the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out field operations in accordance with instructions and standard procedures and practices. Assignments are given in the form of oral and/or written work orders indicating the nature and location of the work to be done. Work is subject to review in progress and upon completion for results. Supervision and discipline is exercised over work crews of foreman, laborers and equipment operators. Also assists in budget preparations and assumes responsibilities of the Park Superintendent in his/her absence.
Schedule- This position is not anticipated to start until mid June 2026
This 40 hour a week Non Union exempt position works a regular schedule of 7am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. This position will seasonally shift its hours to 6am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday. Due to the nature of the position, this role will be required to attend meetings or to perform work related tasks that fall outside the work hours described above.
Salary$31.37 - $35.44 Hourly, $65,242 - $73,717 Annually, Non Union non-exempt Grade 10, 8 hour shift
Position Duties
- Plans, assigns, and supervises the daily work of Park Maintenance personnel;
- Instructs crews on proper work methods and conducts safety training;
- Inspects and reviews work;
- Conducts playground safety inspections, completes reports, and assigns appropriate repairs;
- Responsible for overseeing the productivity of various Park Maintenance personnel on a daily basis;
- Supervises and participates in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields and turf management;
- Supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of park structures including restroom buildings, playgrounds, fencing, irrigation systems, and related infrastructure;
- Supervises and participates in the cutting of brush and trees along the bike path, and park trails;
- Operates road grader, front end loader, backhoe, bulldozer and related construction equipment as needed;
- Performs related work as required;
- Serves as a member of various staff committees as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High School graduate or GED required;
- At least five (5) years of direct experience in park and grounds maintenance;
- Additional training in the field of turf management, plumbing, electrical, and equipment repair desirable
Required Licenses
- Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid RI CDL Class A license, with all applicable type ratings, certifications, endorsements as required, within 3 months of hire;
- Must have possession of a valid Department of Labor Hoisting Engineer’s License to operate heavy equipment;
- Must have or be able to obtain within 3 months of notice, all necessary licenses, certificates, ratings and endorsements as required to fulfill the duties of this position.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities
- Considerable knowledge of park operations, building operations, plumbing, wiring, carpentry, and the exercise of considerable independent judgment in determining park care needs;
- Ability to plan work and supervise a small crew of semi-skilled and unskilled workers;
- Considerable knowledge of building materials for varied uses, and plant material; considerable knowledge of insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals used in park and building maintenance;
- Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of power equipment, power tools, and related equipment;
- Ability to determine materials needed and provide cost estimates for specified projects;
- Ability to deal with the general public on a daily basis in a helpful and courteous manner;
- Ability to select building materials appropriate for various repairs or new construction considering environmental conditions, use of the area, aesthetics, strength, durability and maintenance requirements;
- Ability to read plans and properly use a transit/level;
- Ability to operate a backhoe and other power and hand tools used in park maintenance work safely and efficiently;
- Ability to operate a dump truck safely and efficiently;
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and under unfavorable weather conditions.
