Software Engineer – Backend

ROLE SUMMARY
At Game Theory, backend engineers don’t just write APIs — they own the systems that determine how people experience sport. From real-time matchmaking to computer vision data pipelines, the infrastructure you build has a direct and visible impact on players across India.
You’ll work in a genuinely AI-first environment where tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and MCPs are part of everyday engineering, not a novelty. We’re looking for someone who is self-driven, takes ownership seriously, and wants their work to matter.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design and build scalable, production-grade backend systems using Node.js and MongoDB.
• Own features end-to-end — from architecture and implementation through to deployment and monitoring.
• Contribute meaningfully to product and feature decisions alongside the CTO and product team.
• Define quality standards by writing structured testing guides that specify how features should be validated, what edge cases matter, and how AI-assisted testing should be conducted.
• Conduct thorough code reviews and uphold engineering standards across the codebase.
• Work with cloud infrastructure on AWS and GCP — queues, caching, and distributed systems.
• Maintain and improve internal tooling built on Next.js.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure system reliability.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• 2–5 years of backend engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js and MongoDB.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure — AWS or GCP.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or MCPs.
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design and development.
• Self-motivated with a high-ownership mindset — you identify problems and drive them to resolution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with message queues and caching systems.
• Familiarity with Next.js.
• Strong system design skills.
• Prior experience in a startup or early-stage environment.
