Position Overview
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Science will provide engaging, rigorous, and comprehensive educational knowledge bases for U.S. elementary, middle school, and high school learners. Courses may include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth/Environmental Science. The role requires strong foundational science and content knowledge to support instruction aligned to U.S. curriculum standards (e.g., NGSS or state standards).
Key Responsibilities:
Subject Matter Expertise Develop curriculum-aligned content covering:
- Life science, cell biology, human body systems, cellular processes, genetics, evolution, ecology, life cycles, traits, and inheritance.
- Physical science, properties of matter, and chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, reactions, stoichiometry).
- Physics (forces, motion, mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism) and energy transfer.
- Earth and space science, weather, climate science, Earth systems, and environmental science.
- Engineering design, modeling, basic scientific inquiry, and experimental design.
- Data analysis and scientific investigation.
- Ensure emphasis on observation, questioning, evidence-based and scientific reasoning, hands-on learning approaches, lab investigations, data interpretation, real-world applications, and crosscutting concepts.
Content Contribution & Knowledge Base Development:
- Review course maps, standards, and lesson intent to identify and fill gaps in standards coverage.
- Provide accurate scientific explanations and examples to support the Learn-Think-Try framework.
- Generate rigorous assessment items, including state-test-style questions and open-ended questions.
- Provide scientific content for simple investigations, inquiry tasks, lab simulations, problem-based tasks, and data-driven analytical questions.
- Identify and recommend scientific media needs such as visuals, multimedia, simulations, and age-appropriate media elements.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Instructional Designers and curriculum teams to ensure scientific fidelity within lesson plans.
- Revise scientific content based on structured feedback.
- Participate in virtual collaboration sessions.
AI-Enabled Workflow
- Use AI tools to support drafting, review, assessment item generation, and media ideation.
- Validate outputs for scientific accuracy and standards alignment.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Science Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Experience teaching or developing U.S. elementary or high school science curriculum.
- Strong understanding of inquiry-based learning, content depth, and analytical skills.
- Comfortable using AI tools for content development and enhancement.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Science or Education.
- Familiarity with NGSS.
