About the Department

Under the general supervision of the Highway Maintenance Manager and with work direction from the Assistant Maintenance Manager, is responsible to perform snow and ice control on various roads in Sibley County. This is an on-call position, working as needed to fill in for full-time staff.
 
 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  1. Operates snowplow truck, motor grader, and skid steer for snow removal.   Applies deicing chemicals to remove ice and snow from roads, which require early morning starts, extended hours, and weekend duty including holidays.
  2. Assist with maintenance work on vehicles (washing, oil changes, etc.).
  3. Assists maintenance staff with other activities. 
  4. Hours worked per week can vary due to weather and work status.  Generally 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday.  Seasonal position.  Approximat end date of May 1, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A valid MN Driver's Class A and tanker endorsement license.
  2. Must be able to work early and extended hours, and occasional weekends including holidays.
  3. This position is subject to pre-employment as well as random drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules.
  4. Pre-employment background checks which may include:  driver's license check (including history), criminal records check, and former employment check.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL & MENTAL  REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to operate equipment which requires monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex, and rapid adjustments including, but not limited to; snowplow, sander, motor grader, dump truck, tractor, front end loader.
  2. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements such as operating heavy equipment.
  3. Ability to exert moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
ENVIRONMENTAL 
  1. Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, machinery, wetness, electrical current, vehicular traffic and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
 
Previous experience in snow and ice control using a tandem snow plow.
