Build the tools that power Shopify from the inside out
At Shopify, our internal tools aren't just nice-to-haves—they're the backbone that lets Shopifolk move fast and build incredible products for our merchants. We're looking for Senior, Staff and Senior Staff Engineers who get excited about creating powerful, intuitive tools that make complex work feel simple.
What You'll Build
You'll join the team behind some of Shopify's most innovative internal systems—tools that have fundamentally changed how we operate:
- Mastery: Our learning and development platform that's reimagining how Shopifolk grow their skills and careers outside traditional corporate ladders
- Flex Comp: Our groundbreaking compensation system that gives employees the power to choose how they want to allocate their total rewards between salary, RSUs, and stock options
- And more: From developer productivity tools to operational dashboards that keep our platform humming
What You'll Do
- Design and build scalable, reliable internal tools that solve real problems for teams across Shopify
- Lead technical architecture decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term vision
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to deeply understand user needs
- Mentor other engineers and elevate the technical quality of our internal systems
- Champion best practices in software development while maintaining the pragmatism to ship

You'll thrive in this role if you:
- Have deep experience building and scaling web applications, with a focus on developer experience and internal tools
- Love turning complex workflows into intuitive, powerful interfaces
- Think in systems and can navigate technical decisions with confidence
- Communicate clearly about technical concepts to both engineers and non-engineers
- Get energized by understanding user needs and solving real problems
- Have experience with Ruby on Rails, React, or similar technologies (we use both extensively)
- Enjoy the challenge of balancing speed with quality and technical debt
