Role Description
We’re looking for a hands-on Shopify Developer with strong experience in both Shopify storefront development and custom Shopify app development. The ideal candidate understands how Shopify works beyond themes and front-end customization. You should be comfortable building custom applications, business logic, integrations, and technical solutions within the Shopify ecosystem.
A major focus of this role will be developing and maintaining custom solutions for:
- Product bundles and bundle builders
- Complex discount and promotion logic
- Cart functionality
- Product and variant logic
- Upsells and add-ons
- Internal operational workflows
- Integrations between Shopify and third-party systems
You should understand how popular bundle, discount, and merchandising apps work technically and be capable of determining when Mimi Beds should use an existing third-party app versus developing a custom in-house solution.
This is a full-time, remote role with significant ownership over the technical direction of the Mimi Beds Shopify ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Custom Shopify App Development
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain custom Shopify applications for internal use
- Develop solutions using Shopify APIs, Shopify Functions, webhooks, metafields, metaobjects, and app extensions
- Build applications that interact with products, variants, carts, customers, orders, discounts, and inventory
- Develop administrative interfaces that allow internal teams to configure and manage custom functionality
- Build reliable integrations between Shopify and external platforms, APIs, databases, and business systems
- Maintain and improve existing custom Shopify applications and integrations
- Understand app authentication, permissions, API versioning, deployment, logging, and error handling
- Build solutions that are scalable, maintainable, and properly documented
Bundles, Discounts & Promotional Logic
This is a key area of the role.
- Build and maintain custom product bundle functionality
- Develop fixed bundles, mix-and-match bundles, build-your-own bundles, and dynamically configured product sets
- Understand how bundle components, parent products, variants, inventory, pricing, and order data should be structured
- Build complex discount and promotional rules that go beyond Shopify’s standard functionality
- Work with automatic discounts, discount codes, product-level discounts, order-level discounts, and discount combinations
- Develop logic for promotions such as: Tiered discount, Bundle pricing, Gifts with purchase
- Understand and prevent issues involving discount stacking, conflicting promotions, bundle pricing, and third-party discount apps
- Evaluate existing bundle and discount applications and determine whether custom development would provide better functionality, performance, or flexibility
Shopify Theme & Storefront Development
- Customize and maintain Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Build custom product page functionality and reusable theme components
- Develop dynamic sections, blocks, templates, and storefront experiences
- Connect storefront interfaces to custom apps and backend business logic
- Build custom cart functionality, product configuration tools, upsells, add-ons, and merchandising features
- Ensure new features work properly across desktop and mobile devices
- Maintain compatibility with Shopify theme architecture and platform updates
Shopify Architecture & Technical Ownership
- Own the technical architecture of our Shopify store and custom applications
- Recommend when to use:
- Native Shopify functionality
- A third-party Shopify app
- Theme-level development
- A custom Shopify app
- Reduce unnecessary reliance on third-party apps where custom development provides a better solution
- Review third-party apps for performance, compatibility, technical limitations, and long-term maintainability
- Identify conflicts between themes, apps, scripts, discounts, and custom functionality
- Ensure custom solutions are built in a way that can scale with the business
APIs, Integrations & Automation
- Build and maintain integrations using Shopify’s APIs and webhooks
- Connect Shopify with internal and external systems
- Automate repetitive business processes where appropriate
- Work with product, customer, order, fulfillment, inventory, and other Shopify data
- Troubleshoot failed API calls, webhook issues, synchronization errors, and integration problems
- Ensure integrations include appropriate monitoring, logging, and error handling
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues involving the storefront, cart, checkout, apps, integrations, and custom code
- Investigate bugs and identify root causes rather than relying on temporary fixes
- Monitor custom applications and integrations for errors and failures
- Test changes thoroughly before deployment
- Maintain clean, organized, version-controlled code
- Document custom applications, integrations, business logic, and technical decisions
Required Qualifications
- Strong professional experience developing on Shopify
- Demonstrated experience building custom Shopify applications, not only installing or configuring third-party apps
- Strong understanding of Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API
- Experience working with Shopify Functions
- Experience with webhooks, metafields, metaobjects, and app extensions
- Strong experience with Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Experience with a modern backend and/or full-stack development framework
- Experience working with databases and external APIs
- Strong understanding of Git and version control
- Experience deploying and maintaining production applications
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
