Job Description: Session Moderator (Volunteer)
Public Policy, Governance & Leadership Series
About the Series
This upcoming series of sessions brings together practitioners, policymakers, academics, and emerging leaders to explore pressing themes at the intersection of public policy, governance, and leadership. The sessions are designed to be thought-provoking, inclusive, and action-oriented — fostering dialogue that moves beyond theory into practical insight.
Role Overview
We are looking for a thoughtful and skilled Volunteer Moderator to facilitate one or more sessions in the series. The Moderator plays a pivotal role in shaping the quality of conversation — ensuring sessions are engaging, balanced, and intellectually rigorous while keeping discussions on track and inclusive of diverse perspectives.
This is an unpaid volunteer position offering significant professional visibility and the opportunity to engage with high-calibre speakers and participants.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare thoroughly for each assigned session by reviewing speaker profiles, background materials, and key thematic questions
• Open and close sessions with a clear, engaging framing that sets context for the audience
• Facilitate panel discussions, Q&A segments, and audience interactions in a structured yet dynamic manner
• Probe speakers with incisive follow-up questions to deepen the conversation
• Manage time effectively across all session segments
• Ensure diverse voices are heard and discussions remain respectful and constructive
• Coordinate with the organising team pre- and post-session as needed
• Optionally contribute to drafting session discussion guides or synthesis notes.
Who We’re Looking For
Essential
• Strong public speaking and active listening skills
• Genuine interest in public policy, governance, and/or leadership
• Ability to think on your feet and steer conversations with confidence and tact
• Experience facilitating group discussions, panels, or public events (professional or community-based)
• Comfortable managing diverse viewpoints and potential disagreement constructively
Desirable
• Background or working knowledge in public policy, law, political science, public administration, or related fields
• Prior experience moderating conferences, forums, webinars, or similar events
• Familiarity with the specific themes of the series (e.g., democratic governance, institutional reform, ethical leadership, civic engagement)
• Existing network within policy, government, or civil society circles
Time Commitment
• Per session: Approximately 3–4 hours total (pre-session prep call, the session itself, and brief post-session debrief)
• Series: Moderators may take on one or multiple sessions depending on availability and preference
• Sessions will be held ONLINE
What You Gain
• Prominent professional profile as a named moderator in a high-quality public forum
• Opportunity to engage directly with thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioners
• Access to the full series as a participant
• Certificate of participation / acknowledgement (if applicable)
• Contribution to public discourse on critical governance and policy issues.
