Role Overview
As our SEO Manager, you'll own organic search strategy and execution across oCommerce's portfolio of brands as well as select external client brands. You'll lead a small SEO team while remaining deeply hands-on—developing detailed strategies, conducting technical audits, building content plans, earning high-quality backlinks, analyzing performance, and executing the work required to grow organic visibility. This is not a role where you simply produce recommendations and hand them to someone else. We're looking for someone who can identify an opportunity, build the strategy, create the roadmap, and work alongside the team to execute it. Our brands operate across a diverse range of industries, including travel and hospitality, hotel and villa bookings, professional and local services, consumer brands, specialty niches, and ecommerce. Each requires a different approach to search intent, content, authority, conversion, and competition. SEO is also changing rapidly. Search visibility increasingly extends beyond traditional Google rankings into AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other answer engines. You'll be responsible for helping our brands adapt to that shift by developing and executing both traditional SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) strategies. Success in this role means increasing qualified organic traffic, improving rankings for commercially valuable searches, building domain authority through legitimate earned links, expanding visibility inside AI-powered search experiences, and turning organic search into a measurable growth channel.
Key Responsibilities
- Own SEO and AEO strategy across oCommerce's portfolio of brands and select external client accounts.
- Lead and mentor our SEO team, including managing the day-to-day priorities and development of one direct report.
- Build detailed quarterly and annual organic growth strategies for brands operating in different industries.
- Perform keyword, competitor, SERP, content-gap, backlink, and market opportunity research.
- Develop keyword strategies around both traditional search demand and emerging AI-powered discovery behavior.
- Conduct comprehensive technical SEO audits and work directly with our development team to implement improvements.
- Identify and resolve issues involving crawling, indexing, internal linking, site architecture, canonicals, redirects, duplicate content, structured data, Core Web Vitals, JavaScript rendering, and other technical SEO factors.
- Build and manage content strategies including topic clusters, service pages, location pages, product/category content, destination content, buying guides, educational resources, and blog programs.
- Personally write, edit, and improve SEO-focused content when required.
- Create detailed content briefs that give writers clear guidance around search intent, keywords, entities, questions, supporting topics, internal links, competitive gaps, and conversion opportunities.
- Develop high-quality backlink acquisition strategies focused on legitimate editorial links, digital PR, partnerships, outreach, resource placement, and other sustainable authority-building methods.
- Evaluate backlink opportunities for quality, topical relevance, domain authority, traffic, placement, and potential risk.
- Avoid low-quality, spammy, or volume-based link-building tactics that create long-term risk for our brands.
- Develop AEO strategies designed to improve brand visibility across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other answer engines.
- Improve content structure, entity coverage, structured data, topical authority, citations, FAQs, and information architecture to make our brands easier for both search engines and AI systems to understand.
- Monitor how our brands appear across traditional SERPs and emerging AI search experiences.
- Analyze performance using Google Search Console, GA4, Ahrefs, Semrush, Screaming Frog, and other SEO and analytics platforms.
- Build reporting around rankings, organic traffic, conversions, revenue, backlinks, technical health, share of search, and AI search visibility.
- Identify declining pages and ranking opportunities and proactively develop recovery or growth plans.
- Collaborate closely with web development, creative, content, performance marketing, ecommerce, and leadership teams.
- Balance SEO priorities across multiple brands and industries simultaneously.
- Stay current with Google algorithm changes, AI search developments, new SEO technologies, and changes in how consumers discover brands online.
- Test new approaches rather than relying on outdated SEO playbooks.
- Ensure SEO initiatives are executed—not simply recommended.
Qualifications & Skills
- 5+ years of professional SEO experience with a proven track record of growing organic traffic and search visibility.
- Previous experience leading, mentoring, or managing SEO specialists.
- Strong technical SEO knowledge with the ability to identify issues and clearly communicate solutions to developers.
- Demonstrated experience creating and executing comprehensive SEO strategies rather than working exclusively within one area of SEO.
- Strong keyword research, competitor analysis, SERP analysis, and search intent skills.
- Significant experience developing successful SEO content strategies.
- Strong writing and editing ability, including experience creating long-form blog content and commercially focused landing pages.
- Proven experience acquiring legitimate, high-quality backlinks.
- Strong understanding of backlink quality, topical relevance, authority, anchor text, link velocity, and potentially harmful link-building practices.
- Experience with Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, Ahrefs and/or Semrush, Screaming Frog, and modern SEO research tools.
- Strong understanding of schema markup, structured data, internal linking, information architecture, crawling, indexing, and website performance.
- Experience developing or executing strategies for AI search, Answer Engine Optimization, Generative Engine Optimization, AI Overviews, or LLM visibility.
- Understanding of how entities, structured information, authority, citations, and content architecture influence AI-powered search experiences.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to connect SEO metrics to leads, bookings, conversions, revenue, and business outcomes.
- Experience managing SEO across multiple websites or client accounts simultaneously.
- Experience with travel, hospitality, hotel or vacation rental bookings, and service-based businesses.
- Ecommerce and Shopify SEO experience is a strong plus.
- Agency experience managing brands across multiple industries is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
What we're looking for
- An SEO strategist who still enjoys doing the work.
- Someone who can move comfortably between a 12-month organic growth strategy and fixing an individual page that isn't ranking.
- A leader who can manage a team while remaining accountable for execution.
- Someone who thinks beyond traffic and understands that rankings only matter when they create meaningful business results.
- Deep curiosity about how AI is changing search and consumer discovery.
- Someone actively experimenting with AEO rather than simply adding "AI" to traditional SEO recommendations.
- Strong editorial judgment and the ability to recognize genuinely useful content versus content created only for search engines.
- A quality-first approach to backlinking and authority building.
- Someone comfortable telling us when an SEO tactic isn't worth pursuing.
- Strong analytical instincts and an ability to turn data into clear priorities.
- Ownership mentality—you identify problems, develop solutions, and make sure they get implemented.
- Comfortable managing competing priorities across brands with completely different audiences and search landscapes.
- Extremely detail-oriented without losing sight of the broader commercial objective.
- Curious, resourceful, and constantly learning.
- Excited by an environment where SEO strategy can range from ranking a travel destination page one day to a local service page, product collection, or highly specialized niche article the next.
What we offer
- Opportunity to own organic growth across a growing international portfolio of brands.
- Work across multiple industries, business models, and search environments rather than being limited to a single website.
- The ability to build and shape our internal SEO and AEO capabilities.
- A small team where good ideas can be implemented quickly.
- Direct collaboration with web development, creative, marketing, ecommerce, and executive leadership.
- Access to the tools and resources required to execute ambitious organic growth strategies.
- Opportunity to experiment at the forefront of SEO, AI search, AEO, and emerging discovery channels.
- Competitive salary with performance-based incentives.
- Clear career progression as our portfolio and SEO team expand.
- Modern office located in Mumbai.
- Paid time off and company-recognized holidays.
- Continuous learning, experimentation, and professional development.
