Job details:
This role connects you to a validated educational model already delivering measurable results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform that supports it, scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academic work in two hours daily and perform in the nation's highest percentiles. The system is effective. It requires someone who consistently focuses on the people within it.
You'll establish design excellence, create the standards, and develop the function. Your domain encompasses our learning platform and its ecosystem of learning applications, serving diverse user groups within Alpha and beyond.
A five-year-old cannot yet read and learns counting through a system where novelty must feel like play. A teenager performing two grade levels below standard is restoring confidence after sustained academic setbacks, and a single unclear interaction could reverse that progress. A parent gains visibility into their child's actual learning process. This transparency reduces their concern and enables them to provide meaningful support. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires progress visibility without information overload. You must understand each audience thoroughly enough to make meaningfully distinct design decisions for each.
Your responsibility is the experience layer: conduct in-depth research on each audience, translate findings into actionable design principles that engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately, not conceptual mockups awaiting approval cycles. You collaborate with product leaders who control outcomes and engineers who deliver working software. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You maintain complete ownership.
You'll employ AI as a force multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, but your professional judgment—not the model's initial output—determines what ships. Primary emphasis remains on our education platform, supplemented by occasional work in other areas.
What You Will Be Doing
- Conduct user research across fundamentally different audience segments and develop design principles reflecting that understanding
- Construct and maintain design systems within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and cumulative design value rather than fragmentation
- Develop functional prototypes enabling product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
- Evaluate existing products from the user's vantage point: identify experience breakdowns, engagement costs, and high-impact improvement opportunities
- Establish design culture: feedback mechanisms, trade-off evaluation methods, and non-negotiable standards
- Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenge requests that degrade user experience
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Setting product strategy; product leaders own that domain, you ensure experience quality supports it
- Creating static mockups requiring code translation
- Focusing on a single product; your scope spans the complete portfolio
- Executing predetermined design briefs; you synthesize context from ambiguous inputs and begin design work with partial information
- Requesting approval; you possess authority to identify and resolve UX issues independently
Basic Requirements
Senior UX Designer key responsibilities
- Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through delivered experience
- Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across audiences significantly different from yourself
- Verified design excellence in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored solutions rather than template patterns, combined with well-defined design perspectives
- Established AI-integrated workflow: rapid iteration capability, critical evaluation skills, and willingness to refine or reject initial AI outputs instead of accepting defaults
- Capability to convert designs into code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
- Confident building a design function and culture from the ground up, not joining established processes
