The position of Mechanical Metallurgist is to drive and support development of new products & processes that satisfy product requirements on mechanical properties such as strength, ductility and fatigue etc. This position will support development of products (FRP/Foil & Extrusion) in all the downstream business areas.

Supporting Actions
Materials & Microstructure Expertise
- Build and sustain in?house expertise on aluminum alloy metallurgy, focusing on microstructural mechanisms controlling strength, ductility, fatigue, creep, and environmental degradation.
- Develop a strong understanding of deformation, precipitation, texture, and damage mechanisms across wrought aluminum products including FRP, foil, and extrusions.
- Act as a subject?matter expert for mechanical property–related issues across the downstream value chain.
Translation of Customer & Application Requirements
- Analyze customer and application?specific requirements related to mechanical performance and durability.
- Translate these requirements into material design, alloy selection, and process window definitions.
- Support customer technical discussions, trials, and qualification programs with sound metallurgical rationale.
Process & Product Guidance to Plants and Design Teams
- Provide clear technical direction to manufacturing plants on optimal processing paths, including thermomechanical processing and heat treatment routes.
- Guide design and application engineers on optimal material selection for target performance, manufacturability, and cost.
- Support troubleshooting of plant and product issues related to mechanical property variability or failures.
Knowledge Management & Product Data
- Manage and document development activities to build a robust internal knowledge database of mechanical properties for FRP, foil, and extrusion products.
- Own and continuously update the mechanical properties sections of product data sheets, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and traceability.
- Establish best practices for test methods, data interpretation, and reporting.
- Document the key research findings in high quality, peer reviewed, publication worthy tech memo.
- Document and record inventions in Invention Record and work with legal team for patent filing where applicable.
- Present non-sensitive research findings in international journals, conferences to more widely disseminate knowledge and showcase Hindalco R&D capabilities.
Project management and execution
- Work with stakeholders to scope the project appropriately
- Work with the team and ensure proper project resource management
- Work closely with external project partners and vendor management
- Keep track of project financials e.g. potential revenue, cost, incremental EBIDTA, cashflow and NPV
- Follow and strengthen project management and execution e.g. charters, milestone planning, stage gate, QBR etc
Technical development of self and others
- Attend technical conferences, review technical and academic literature, attend supplier webinars, interact with experts, visit plants etc to stay abreast of technological advancements in the field of aluminium metallurgy, rolling and heat treatments
- Provide trainings to engineers, operators on operation, scientific principles and latest technologies.
- Present research findings at forums like manthan, downstream summits etc
- Provide customized mentoring to team members and technical colleagues at HIC and downstream business
External and internal customer insight generation
- Pursue design thinking and identify the key pain points of the internal/external customer
- Develop keen understanding of the key functionality of product/technology to be developed
- Quantify the value generated for the customer upon attainment of the key technical specifications/features of the product/technology
Capability enhancement and development
- Maintenance and enhancement of existing lab and pilot capabilities along with the lab-in-charge
- Identify opportunities for external collaboration for capability enhancement
- Identify and prepare capex proposals for in-house capability development
