The SET function described here is being built inside the client's engineering organization. You would be a Codem engineer owning that scope on the ground.
Overview
Codem is hiring a Senior Software Engineer in Test to join a net-new SET function at one of our enterprise clients — a high-transaction-volume supply chain technology platform serving major consumer brands.
The function is being stood up from scratch. It exists not to take quality ownership away from engineering, but to build the automation infrastructure that lets engineering execute on that ownership at scale.
You'd sit embedded within the product group, building the frameworks and AI-assisted tooling that make engineering's accountability for quality sustainable. This is for someone who treats testing as a systems-building problem, not a checklist.
Why This Role
- AI-assisted test generation — turning acceptance criteria into automated scripts — is a live, unsolved problem here, not a vendor tool you're asked to babysit.
- You work alongside a SET Lead defining cross-org standards from day one, so you shape how those standards land, not just inherit a rulebook.
- You're closing gaps the client's own testing charter flags as unowned today, with real budget and executive sponsorship behind the function.
What You'll Build
E2E test automation
- Playwright-based suites covering product groups's golden-path journeys, wired into GitHub Actions CI and gating releases
- Partner with PMs to convert their Golden Path journey lists into automated coverage
- Own suite health — flake reduction, runtime, reliability as coverage grows
AI-assisted test generation
- Tooling that converts acceptance criteria and user stories into automated test scripts
- Evaluate and integrate AI test-generation tools into the team's daily workflow
Regression & coverage infrastructure
- A regression test register mapping critical paths to automated coverage
- Contract/API test tooling for service boundaries
- Coverage reporting wired into a shared dashboard, kept accurate as coverage grows
Load & performance testing
- Load and performance frameworks engineers can apply directly to applicable stories
- Partner with engineers to define and validate performance thresholds pre-release
What We're Looking For
Required
- Test automation frameworks — You've built and maintained production E2E suites (Playwright or equivalent), not just written individual test cases.
- CI/CD integration — You can wire suites into GitHub Actions and configure release gates that actually block bad merges.
- Programming proficiency — JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or similar. You write test automation as real software: structured, reusable, maintainable.
- API/contract testing — Hands-on with contract tooling (e.g. Pact) or API tooling (e.g. Postman).
- Load/performance testing — Experience with k6, Locust, or equivalent.
- Directed AI-assisted development — You use AI coding tools as a productivity multiplier while keeping your own technical judgment in the loop.
- CLI-native workflow — You work from the terminal and script your own tooling rather than relying on GUI test recorders.
How you work
- You own things end-to-end and follow through from design to production.
- You explain technical trade-offs clearly to engineers, PMs, and stakeholders, and you listen well.
- You think about failure modes, monitoring, and operational concerns as part of design, not after.
Bonus
- Built a test automation function from scratch, not just extended an existing one
- Hands-on with AI-assisted test generation specifically, not just general-purpose AI coding assistants
- Partnered directly with PMs on acceptance criteria and Golden Path definition
- E-commerce, logistics, or supply-chain domain experience; security/dependency scanning in CI
What Success Looks Like
30 days: Existing coverage audited against product group's Golden Path list, top gaps identified, at least one new automated E2E test shipped into CI.
90 days: Regression test register live and gating releases; contract/API tooling in place for at least one major service boundary; AI-assisted test generation piloted with one team.
- 6 months: Load/performance framework in active use on applicable stories; product group's releases clear the client's Definition of Done quality gates without manual rework surfacing at UAT.
