The Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll take ownership of backend features and services, from shaping the technical approach through delivery and ongoing improvement. This is a hands-on individual contributor role working with our engineering team.
You'll build new and AI-powered features, improve existing functionality, and lead migrations, rewrites, and refactors as Snapfix scales. AI tools are central to how we work. You'll use them across design, coding, testing, debugging, and review, applying your judgment and owning what you ship.
We're language-agnostic and value strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to work across an evolving stack.
Responsibilities
- Deliver features end to end: Collaborate with product and engineering to clarify requirements, design APIs and services, and own implementation, testing, release, and production follow-up.
- Build AI-powered capabilities: Integrate AI into useful product workflows, managing output quality, data privacy, latency, cost, and service failures.
- Improve the existing product: Resolve bugs, simplify complex code, and improve reliability and usability. Balance customer needs with longer-term improvements.
- Lead safe migrations and refactors: Decide what to extend, refactor, or replace. Deliver changes incrementally, protecting data integrity and planning safe rollouts and recovery.
- Help the backend scale: Resolve application, API, and MySQL bottlenecks through better queries, indexing, caching, and background processing.
- Raise engineering quality: Write readable, secure code and meaningful tests. Review changes, document decisions, and share knowledge and effective AI-assisted development practices.
- Own production outcomes: Work with DevOps and the team to monitor services, investigate incidents, and address root causes.
Experience and Skills
- Backend experience: 5+ years building production backend systems, with ownership of substantial features or services and clear examples of impact and tradeoffs.
- AI-driven engineering: AI coding tools and agents are integral to your daily workflow. You can demonstrate faster, effective delivery and explain how you validate correctness, security, and maintainability.
- AI feature delivery: You've shipped AI-powered product features and understand integration, evaluation, and production operation.
- Strong fundamentals and judgment: Proficiency in a backend language, API and service design experience, and willingness to work across PHP, Python, and potentially Node.js. You solve ambiguous problems without unnecessary complexity.
- Database depth: Strong SQL skills, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, transactions, and safe migrations. Our primary database is MySQL.
- Production-minded development: Experience with automated testing, debugging, observability, and application security, including failure modes and deployment risks.
- Clear collaboration: You explain decisions, document work, give constructive feedback, and collaborate async across time zones.
Nice to have
- Experience with PHP, Python, or Node.js, particularly migrations between languages or frameworks.
- Experience with Redis, queues, background jobs, or event-driven systems.
- Experience scaling a SaaS product or working at a startup.
- Familiarity with AWS, Datadog, Docker, or CI/CD workflows.
Location: This role can be remote within India or based in Ahmedabad at Snapfix headquarters.
