About True Sparrow
True Sparrow is a product design and engineering services company. We partner with enterprises and startups across North America and Europe, embedding deeply with their teams as a trusted extension of their organization. We are a small, fully remote team of builders who care about craft and ship work we are proud of.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer to work with one of our clients, a platform powering campus and workplace experiences for leading universities and enterprises. You'll embed directly with their US-based team as a senior contributor, designing and building complex backend architecture, integrations with third-party enterprise systems (Canvas, PeopleSoft, and similar), and AI-driven workflows powered by AWS Bedrock.
This is a hands-on role that demands strong independent judgment. You'll own work end-to-end: from initial architecture proposals through fully tested, production-ready code, with minimal oversight.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate in real-time with the US-based team to translate complex product requirements into scalable, idiomatic Rails architecture.
- Participate in live technical discussions, pair programming sessions, and real-time code review.
- Must follow idiomatic Ruby on Rails conventions and their established architectural patterns.
- Write clean and maintainable code that leverages the framework's built-in tools over custom-built abstractions.
- Build and maintain integrations with external enterprise systems over both REST APIs and MCP, including authentication, credential management, error handling, and observability.
- Contribute to event-driven messaging infrastructure and service-level migrations across a multi-service Rails ecosystem (10+ services, RabbitMQ/SNS/SQS).
- Build and extend AI-driven workflows using AWS Bedrock (Converse API) alongside the client's engineers.
- Deliver features end-to-end: architecture proposal, implementation, test coverage, and production release.
- Maintain high code quality through thorough RSpec coverage, clean PR hygiene, and proactive debugging.
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a heavy concentration in Ruby on Rails.
- Working times: 2 pm to 11:30 pm IST. Since you will be working very closely with our US-based client and their customers, this is a non-negotiable requirement.
- Outstanding communication: you can hold your own in live technical discussions, pair programming sessions, and real-time code reviews.
- Expert-level Ruby on Rails knowledge: ActiveModel validations, ActiveRecord callbacks, standard routing, native Rails encryption.
- Strong PostgreSQL proficiency, including jsonb columns and complex relational data modeling.
- Deep understanding of Object-Oriented Programming principles, modular design, and building loosely coupled systems.
- Experience with message queue architectures like RabbitMQ, AWS SNS/SQS, or similar.
- Solid Sidekiq experience: job idempotency, retry semantics, queue prioritization.
- Strong background in writing comprehensive automated tests in RSpec.
- Experience in implementing SSO and enterprise authentication flows (OAuth2, SAML, OIDC).
- Strong understanding of authentication and session management, including token refresh, biometric auth, and secure credential storage.
- Familiarity with enterprise security practices, including data encryption, secure local storage, and compliance requirements.
- Working experience with the AWS ecosystem, ideally including AWS Bedrock and related AI-driven workflows.
- Bias toward ownership: you treat every feature as if your name is on it and proactively unblock yourself.
- Comfortable working in a remote-first environment with a US-based client team.
- Immediate joiners.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AWS S3 for file storage, including signed URLs, lifecycle policies, and secure access patterns.
- Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and its application to AI-driven workflows.
- Experience with AWS Kendra or other enterprise search/retrieval services.
- Familiarity with higher education technology ecosystems and data models (student records, course rosters, enrollment lifecycles).
- Previous experience building complex multi-tenant SaaS architectures in Rails.
- Familiarity with enterprise identity systems (LDAP/Active Directory, SAML, SSO).
Why Join True Sparrow
- Ship software used by students and employees at top universities and enterprises across North America.
- Meaningful, visible impact; your work ships to real users.
- Remote-first culture
- A small team that gets it. You'll work alongside senior engineers and designers who have shipped with enterprise clients across the globe.
