DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
We are building the "Rakuten Economic Bloc" by leveraging the market scale of "Rakuten Points," which have surpassed 2 trillion-yen worth of cumulative issued points, by collaborating services with Rakuten Group companies, and by introducing cashless payment services at real stores, which are growing at an accelerating pace. Our payment services are available at approximately 5 million online and offline locations nationwide, including supermarkets, convenience stores, and shopping malls, as well as at approximately 1 million locations where transportation-related e-money is accepted, and the number of locations where these services are available continues to grow.
RECRUITMENT BACKGROUND
We are seeking a highly experienced Technical QA Lead to drive quality assurance for our critical web and backend applications. This role ensures the highest quality, reliability, and performance of our web and backend ecosystem, including the Point Card Registration portal (processing ~474 billion JPY GMS monthly, ~347,000 new registrations) and WSDK (~10 million MAU). As an integral part of our Web Team, you will provide technical leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to the QA team, collaborating with development and DevOps to embed robust QA practices throughout the SDLC.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical QA Leadership & Delivery:
* Lead and collaborate with stakeholders for timely, high-quality project delivery.
* Optimize QA processes and increase efficiency using AI.
* Report key QA metrics (Quality, Productivity, CI, Corrective/Preventive Actions) to stakeholders.
* Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the QA team.
* Define and enforce QA standards across web applications.
* Proactively identify and mitigate risks/issues, providing solutions to prevent future occurrences.
Technical Expertise:
* Design, implement, and maintain robust, scalable automated test frameworks for web applications.
* Oversee comprehensive test execution: functional, regression, performance, security, usability.
* Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines for continuous quality feedback.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
* 8-10 years in Quality Assurance, with 3-5 years as a Technical QA Lead or Senior QA Automation Engineer, focusing on high-traffic web, mobile and backend applications.
* ISTQB certification – At least test analyst level
* Hands on experience in using AI agentic tools like Claude Code, Github Copilot, Cursor or any equivalent tools.
* Understanding of Identity Access Management (IAM) principles and authentication (Auth) mechanisms.
* Hands on experience in performance testing and engineering using any perf test tools.
* Extensive experience in manual and automated testing of complex web and backend applications.
* Proficiency in advanced automation tools, scripting (Typescript, JavaScript), and testing frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Appium, Playwright, Cypress).
* Hands-on experience designing and maintaining automated test suites, and CI/CD pipelines.
* Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, SSL/TLS).
* Experience with relational databases (MySQL/MariaDB) and SQL.
* Proficient with Git, including branching strategies and code reviews.
* Experience with monitoring/alerting tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, PagerDuty) for web application health.
* Knowledge of modern deployment techniques (blue/green, canary, A/B testing) from a QA perspective.
* Excellent technical documentation skills for test strategies and defect reports.
* Strong problem-solving, log analysis, and performance debugging skills for web issues under high load.
* Proven leadership, mentoring, and team development skills.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional teams and senior management.
* Strong analytical, critical thinking, and risk identification abilities.
* Deep understanding of Agile and DevOps principles and QA integration.
* Proficient in project management and balancing stakeholder expectations.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Experience with any cloud application/infrastructure testing.
* Understanding of microservices and event-driven architectures testing.
* Observability: Leveraging advanced logging, metrics, tracing for defect analysis.
* AIOps: Familiarity with AI/ML for automated anomaly detection in QA.
* Familiarity with message queues (Kafka, Redis) for testing data workflows.
* Experience with capacity planning, disaster recovery, and change management from a QA perspective.
* Interest in high-load real-time payment systems and web interfaces.
* Experience in cross-cultural development teams.
* Self-directed projects, research, or open-source contributions.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATION
BE/BTech/MS/MTech in Computer Science, IT, MCA, or related discipline.
