Job title: Senior Power BI Developer
Role summary
Senior-level BI developer responsible for designing, building and maintaining scalable Power BI solutions that deliver timely, accurate business insights. Works closely with data engineers, analysts, product owners and stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust reports, dashboards and data models.
Key responsibilities
Design and develop end-to-end Power BI reports and dashboards with strong UX, performance and accessibility.
Build and optimize semantic data models (star schema, relationships, measures) and implement advanced DAX calculations.
Write, review and optimize complex SQL queries and stored procedures against enterprise data sources.
Collaborate with data engineering to define data requirements, ingestion patterns and transformations.
Implement version control and CI/CD best practices for Power BI artifacts using Git/GitHub.
Troubleshoot performance and data quality issues; tune reports, queries and models for responsiveness at scale.
Document solutions, data lineage and business logic; produce technical and user-facing documentation.
Mentor junior developers, conduct code/review sessions and drive best practices for BI development.
Support ad-hoc analytics requests and participate in sprint planning and stakeholder demos.
Required skills & experience
5+ years of hands-on experience building Power BI reports, datasets and dashboards in a production environment.
Expert-level SQL skills (complex joins, window functions, CTEs, performance tuning, indexing knowledge)
Strong DAX skills for measures, calculated columns and row-level security implementation.
Practical experience with Git/GitHub for source control and branching workflows (pull requests, code reviews).
Solid understanding of data modeling concepts (normalization, denormalization, star schema, slowly changing dimensions).
Experience working with cloud data platforms (Azure Synapse, Azure SQL, AWS Redshift, BigQuery, or equivalent).
Strong communication skills and experience working directly with business stakeholders.
Nice-to-have
Experience building Power Apps or integrating Power Platform solutions with Power BI.
Familiarity with dbt (data build tool) for modular transformations, testing and documentation.
Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for BI artifacts and automation (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
Knowledge of Python/R for lightweight data transformation or analytics.
Experience with row-level security, dataset certification and governance processes.
Education & certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics or related field (or equivalent experience).
Power BI, Azure, or data engineering certifications are a plus.
Success measures / KPIs
Report performance (average load time and interactivity) and user satisfaction scores.
Number of reusable datasets and governed data models delivered.
Time-to-insight for stakeholder requests and number of automated/manual tasks reduced.
Code quality metrics: pull request review time, test coverage (if applicable), and deployment frequency.
