Candidates with only academic knowledge, freshers, or candidates without significant hands-on experience in PLC programming, automation troubleshooting, system integration, and commissioning are not suitable for this position.
Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in Marine / Offshore Automation, Shipbuilding, Oil & Gas, or related heavy industrial environments.

This position is open ONLY to candidates currently based in Mumbai or the immediate Mumbai metropolitan region.
Candidates from outside Mumbai will not be considered for this position.
Candidates based in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, or nearby areas who can commute to the SMEC Automation office are preferred.

SMEC Automation is looking for an experienced and technically strong Senior PLC Programmer to join our engineering team in Mumbai.
This position is strictly intended for experienced professionals with strong hands-on PLC programming and commissioning expertise. Candidates with proven experience in the Marine, Offshore, Shipbuilding, Oil & Gas, or related industrial automation sectors will be strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will be responsible for independently handling PLC programming, control system development, system integration, testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and client-site support for complex automation projects.
⚠️ This is not an entry-level or graduate position. Candidates without substantial hands-on PLC programming and commissioning experience will not be considered.
⚓ Strong preference will be given to candidates with Marine / Offshore automation experience.
⚙️ Key Responsibilities
- Independently develop, modify, configure, and troubleshoot PLC control programs for complex automation systems.
- Design and implement PLC-based control logic for Marine, Offshore, Oil & Gas, and Industrial applications.
- Work with PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Mitsubishi, or equivalent systems.
- Develop and modify HMI/SCADA applications, including control graphics, alarms, trends, interlocks, and operator interfaces.
- Perform PLC system integration, FAT, SAT, testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and validation.
- Analyze control system faults and independently identify and resolve PLC, I/O, communication, instrumentation, and control logic issues.
- Work with industrial communication networks and protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, OPC, CAN, and other relevant protocols.
- Interpret and work from electrical drawings, control schematics, P&IDs, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and system architecture documents.
- Develop, review, and maintain PLC software, HMI/SCADA programs, functional descriptions, control narratives, and technical documentation.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), installation, commissioning, and sea/site trials where required.
- Interface with electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, project, and service teams to ensure successful project execution.
- Coordinate directly with clients, shipyards, vessel teams, consultants, and other project stakeholders during commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
- Carry out site visits and offshore/marine assignments for installation, testing, commissioning, modifications, and technical support.
- Support existing clients with PLC upgrades, system modifications, retrofits, breakdown support, and control system maintenance.
- Review existing PLC programs and implement modifications while ensuring system reliability and operational safety.
- Assist in technical estimation, system design, hardware selection, and engineering documentation when required.
- Mentor junior engineers and programmers and provide technical guidance during project execution.
- Ensure all engineering activities are carried out in accordance with project specifications, safety requirements, quality standards, and applicable industry practices.
⚓ Marine / Offshore Experience – Strongly Preferred
Candidates with practical experience in Marine and Offshore Automation will receive preference.
Relevant experience may include automation systems for:
- Commercial vessels
- Offshore support vessels
- FPSO / FSO systems
- Oil & Gas vessels and installations
- Drilling rigs
- Shipbuilding and shipyard projects
- Marine propulsion and auxiliary systems

Experience working on vessel commissioning, offshore commissioning, sea trials, shipyard projects, or marine control systems will be considered a significant advantage.
🎓 Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Automation, Control Systems, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant hands-on experience in PLC programming, automation engineering, system integration, and commissioning.
- Strong preference for candidates with Marine / Offshore automation experience.
- Proven experience in independently developing and troubleshooting PLC programs.
- Strong practical experience with one or more major PLC platforms such as:
- Siemens
- Allen-Bradley / Rockwell
- Schneider
- Mitsubishi
- ABB
- Or equivalent industrial PLC platforms
- Strong experience with HMI / SCADA systems.
- Good understanding of industrial communication protocols and networking.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot PLC hardware, software, I/O, communication, and control-system issues.
- Strong ability to read and understand electrical drawings, P&IDs, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and I/O documentation.
- Experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and client-site execution.
- Willingness to travel extensively for marine, offshore, shipyard, and client-site projects.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, decision-making, and communication skills.
