Senior Ophthalmology Coder
Full-Time | Office-Based
We are expanding our Physician Practice Coding team and are seeking senior-level, certified Ophthalmology Coders who can independently support ophthalmologists in a high-volume clinical environment. This role is ideal for coders with deep specialty expertise who are comfortable working directly with providers and ensuring accurate, compliant professional fee coding.
About the Role
As a Senior Ophthalmology Coder, you will be responsible for end-to-end professional fee (Profee) coding for ophthalmology physician encounters. You will work closely with ophthalmologists to interpret clinical documentation, ensure compliance with CMS, NCCI, and payer guidelines, and support appropriate reimbursement through accurate coding and modifier application.
This position requires strong knowledge of ophthalmology-specific CPT coding, global surgery rules, diagnostic testing policies, and excellent communication skills to partner effectively with physicians.
Key Responsibilities
· Perform accurate and compliant Profee coding for ophthalmology physician services.
· Code Evaluation & Management services, including office visits and post-operative care.
· Apply eye visit codes (92002–92014) appropriately when documentation supports their use.
· Code ophthalmology diagnostic testing, including:
o Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
o Visual field testing
o Fundus photography
o Corneal topography
· Code surgical procedures such as
o Cataract surgery (routine and complex)
o Glaucoma procedures
o Retina services (office-based and surgical)
· Apply correct modifiers (-24, -25, -50, -51, -58, -59, -79, -LT/-RT).
· Ensure appropriate use of global period rules and post-operative visit coding.
· Review documentation for accuracy, medical necessity, and compliance.
· Collaborate directly with physicians to clarify documentation and provide coding guidance.
· Stay current with CMS, NCCI edits, payer policies, and annual CPT/ICD updates.
Required Qualifications
· 2+ years of recent Ophthalmology physician practice coding experience with 5+ years of overall coding experience.
· Demonstrated ability to code independently with minimal oversight.
· Strong understanding of
o Ophthalmology CPT code sets
o Global surgery rules
o Modifier usage
o CMS, NCCI, and payer guidelines
· Active AHIMA or AAPC credential (CPC, CPC-P, CPMA, CCS, or equivalent + COPC – Certified Ophthalmology Professional Coder or equivalent)
· Experience working directly with physicians in a practice setting.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in large ophthalmology groups or multispecialty practices.
· Prior involvement in provider education or documentation improvement.
· Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic, Athena, NextGen, or eClinicalWorks.
· Experience with coding quality reviews or internal audits.
