Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Team Lead - Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to drive the development of innovative robotics and unmanned systems. The ideal candidate will lead cross-functional teams, oversee design-to-manufacturing processes, and ensure engineering excellence from concept to production. Prior experience in defence-related product development is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Project Management
- Lead and mentor a team of mechanical engineers in robotic system design and development.
- Oversee new product development (NPD) initiatives, ensuring alignment with technical and business objectives.
- Define project milestones, technical requirements, and development timelines for complex robotic systems.
- Conduct design reviews and manage cross-functional collaboration to meet project goals.
- Drive technology roadmaps and innovation strategies for robotics and unmanned systems.
Mechanical Design & Development Design
- Design and develop mechanical systems for robots, drones, and autonomous platforms.
- Create 3D part and assembly models using advanced CAD tools (Creo, SolidWorks).
- Develop motion control systems, actuation mechanisms, and structural components optimised for performance and reliability.
- Implement thermal management, vibration isolation, and environmental protection strategies in robotic systems.
- Integrate sensors, motors, controllers, and power systems into cohesive robotic platforms that meet military-grade specifications. Prototype to Production
- Oversee the transition of designs from prototype to full-scale production.
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
- Develop production documentation, including assembly instructions and test procedures.
- Perform Multiphysics FEA simulations and tolerance stack-up analysis to validate design integrity. Quality & Compliance
- Conduct CFMEA (Component Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) for robotic system reliability.
- Ensure compliance with industry and defense standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1472).
- Establish and enforce quality control processes for robotic system manufacturing.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate efforts between mechanical, electrical, software, and control systems engineers.
- Work with industrial designers to create ergonomic and aesthetic robotic solutions.
- Engage with marketing and product teams to align technical capabilities with market needs.
- Collaborate with test engineers to develop robust validation protocols. Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated with emerging robotics, materials, and manufacturing technologies.
- Conduct competitive analysis, patent research, and benchmarking to drive product innovation.
- Identify opportunities for performance enhancement, cost reduction, and product improvements.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or robotics.
- 5-8 years of experience in product design and development, focusing on robotics or unmanned systems.
- Expertise in CAD tools (Creo, SolidWorks) and GD&T applications.
- Proven leadership experience in NPD, team management, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and transition from prototype to production.
- Ability to manage complex projects independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with defense-related products and military applications.
- Familiarity with defense industry regulations (ITAR, EAR, DFARS).
- Expertise in FEA simulations, dynamic system analysis, and control systems.
- Knowledge of robotics motion planning, servomechanisms, and actuation systems.
