Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who can take a special purpose machine from a blank sheet to a working installation. This is not a drafting or detailing role. If you have spent your career modelling parts to someone else's specification, this will not suit you.
Key Responsibilities
- Read the client requirement, challenge it where it is incomplete, and develop the concept and layout
- Carry out full mechanical design of special-purpose machines, conveyor systems and automated equipment including structures, mechanisms, guarding, pneumatics and motion
- Design and integrate conveyor systems (belt, roller, chain, pallet-handling and transfer systems) into complete machine builds
- Select components: size and choose pneumatic cylinders, actuators, linear guides, bearings, drives, motors, sensors and structural sections based on load, stroke, cycle time and duty
- Carry out market and vendor sourcing: research suppliers, compare specifications and pricing, download supplier CAD models and integrate them into the assembly
- Produce manufacturing and assembly drawings that a machine shop can build from directly
- Support build, commissioning and design changes on the shop floor
Required Skills and Experience
- 11 to 13 years designing and building special-purpose machines, conveyor systems, automation equipment, jigs or fixtures. Candidates must have built machines, not just modelled parts
- Proven machine-building experience — from concept through to installation and commissioning
- Automation knowledge — PLC, EOAT, HMI, sensors
- Strong proficiency in SOLIDWORKS or equivalent 3D CAD, including large assemblies and drawing standards
- Demonstrable component selection ability. Candidates will be asked to justify components chosen on a past machine and explain the reasoning
- Excellent spoken and written English. The role involves regular calls with European clients, and clear communication is a hard requirement
- Genuinely self-directed, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
Preferred Skills
- Experience working with European clients or to European standards, including CE marking and machinery safety
- Exposure to medtech, automotive or plastics equipment
- Familiarity with GD&T and DFM principles
