About the Studio & Project
Flawky Studios is currently entering pre-production on Project: Light & Shadow, a gritty, PC-exclusive Action-RPG developed in Unreal Engine 5. The game features a dark-fantasy "Indo-Gothic" aesthetic, blending corrupted architectural styles with heavy, methodical gameplay. We are a dedicated indie team looking for a technical animation leader to breathe life and weight into our world.
About the Position
We are seeking a technical Senior Gameplay Animator to ground our characters in reality using a Hybrid Workflow (Mocap + Keyframe).
While our Combat Animator handles the fight, you handle the Flow. You will be responsible for the seamless traversal of the world, utilizing Motion Capture data to create realistic movement, while leveraging your technical skills to blend it perfectly in Unreal Engine 5. Additionally, you will direct and handle the cinematic performances for our cutscenes and narrative "Echoes."
Key Responsibilities
- Locomotion & Mocap Integration: Clean and process raw motion capture data for core movement sets (Walk, Run, Sprint, Stops, Pivots), ensuring the data loops perfectly and feels responsive, not "floaty." Retarget Mocap data onto Custom/MetaHuman skeletons using MotionBuilder or Control Rig. Animate fluid traversal mechanics (Climbing, Vaulting, Sliding) by blending mocap bases with hand-keyed adjustments to fit level geometry.
- Cinematic & Narrative Animation: Assemble and refine full-body Mocap data for Cinematic Cutscenes (e.g., Chapter 1 Intro) by enhancing the acting, cleaning up jitter, and ensuring proper eye contact. Animate "Psychic Echoes" ghostly story reenactments that rely heavily on Mocap acting to convey emotion and history without dialogue.
- World Interactions (Hand-Keyed): Create precise, hand-keyed animations for environmental interactions (e.g., pulling levers, opening doors, looting items) where Mocap is too imprecise. Ensure hand placements line up perfectly with in-game props using IK sync-points.
- Engine Implementation: Work directly within Unreal Engine 5 to set up Animation Blueprints and Blend Spaces. Configure Foot IK and Hand IK to ensure characters ground properly on uneven terrain.
Qualifications
- Body Mechanics: A demo reel demonstrating a deep understanding of weight, balance, and realistic human motion.
- Hybrid Workflow: Proven experience cleaning Motion Capture data (MotionBuilder/Maya) and seamlessly blending it with Hand-Keyed layers.
- Technical Animation: Strong, practical understanding of Animation Blueprints, Blend Spaces, and State Machines in Unreal Engine 5.
- Cinematic Eye: The ability to edit and refine raw Mocap performances to elevate narrative cutscenes.
Compensation & Partnership
This position is structured as a high-stakes partnership for our bootstrapped indie studio.
- Profit Sharing: You will be awarded a legally binding share of 4.0% of the game’s Net Profit following commercial release.
- Creative Attribution: Under our Idea Attribution Program, unique interaction ideas or narrative acting choices you make will be formally credited to you
