Company Description Water Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute) is a registered NGO founded in 2008 in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, focused on practical, scalable solutions to water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges across India. It serves as a sector partner of the National Jal Jeevan Mission and provides technical assistance to key national programs, including Swachh Bharat Mission (urban and rural) and Jal Jeevan Mission. The organization combines high-impact grassroots implementation across multiple states with technical support to government, CSR projects, research, and advocacy. WASH Institute also runs formal academic programs in affiliation with Madurai Kamaraj University and regularly organizes national workshops and conferences on WASH themes. Its work has been recognized through multiple national awards from India Today, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and FICCI for excellence in sanitation skills, technology innovation, and water initiatives.
Role Description The Senior Expert role is a full-time remote position responsible for leading high-level technical and advisory work in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene. The Senior Expert will design and oversee technical assistance projects, provide strategic guidance to government partners and internal teams, and contribute to policy, program frameworks, and standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting in-depth sectoral analysis, preparing technical reports and guidelines, supporting capacity-building initiatives, and mentoring project teams and junior staff. The role will collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including ministries, state and local governments, development partners, and CSR partners, to ensure evidence-based, inclusive, and sustainable WASH interventions. The Senior Expert will also contribute to proposal development, represent WASH Institute in expert forums, and help strengthen institutional knowledge through research and documentation.
Qualifications
- Strong expertise in water, sanitation, and hygiene sector policies, programs, and technologies, including rural and urban service delivery.
- Demonstrated experience in technical assistance, program design, and implementation with government bodies, multilateral agencies, or large NGOs.
- Proven skills in research, data analysis, and preparation of technical documents, guidelines, and policy briefs.
- Experience in capacity-building, training design, and facilitation for diverse stakeholders, including government officials and community-based organizations.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively in remote and multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced degree in engineering, public health, environmental science, social sciences, or a related field relevant to the WASH sector.
- Experience working on national flagship programs such as Swachh Bharat Mission or Jal Jeevan Mission is highly desirable.
- Ability to travel occasionally to field locations and partner offices when required.
- Commitment to gender equality, social inclusion, and rights-based approaches in WASH programming.
